kitchen remodel budget
does anyone know what a reasonable kitchen remodel budget is? Basically demolishing what we have now, knocking down a few walls and possibly moving plumbing and sealing up a few windows?
if youve done work (maybe not as extensive) and can share that pricing that would be helpful too bc it may give us an idea of what we can or cant accomplish in our budget. Maybe we need to just re-do the kitchen exactly as is to keep within our price range

I'd guess (based on what we're doing and spending) that you're looking at around $40K for all that work, at least.

As someone who is managing her remodel now (no construction yet, just the planning stages) I can tell you it is VERY difficult just to estimate.
What kind of cabinets are you looking for? (Custom, Stock?) Do you need an architect? What is your square-footage of the space?
I can tell you that just our cabinets alone are costing us 19K--they are custom, but that is just one expense. Good luck!

This exactly... We did a lot of work ourselves, so we were/are able to keep the costs relatively low for the amount of work we did. plus, we just happened to pick one of the less expensive cabinet designs, so that's only costing us around $10K... we weren't looking at the price, just picked what we liked and we lucked out! Also, I can tell you as someone who has already begun construction, that there are almost ALWAYS hidden costs - you knock down a wall and realize you need to replace some of the studs, you need to do rewiring of the electric, some plumbing, etc. ... things that you didn't necessarily expect to have to do, which certainly increases the original estimate.

Re: kitchen remodel budget
We gutted our kitchen, but kept the layout the same. We used Ikea cabinets that my DH assembled and stalled, so we saved a bunch there. We also already had fairly new stainless steel appliances, so we only replaced the sink, faucet and range hood. New tile floor, new tile backsplash, granite countertops. We spent about $12,000. We actually spent more on our master bath redo but that's a different story.

thanks - i think we are going to end up going this route its not ideal (the kitchen layout is awful and there is a ton of wasted space) but 60k is not in our budget and that was the 2 quotes we just got

We were hoping to do Ikea - but they don't have a corner sink, and having the sink in the corner is the best use of space in our kitchen. $12K isn't bad at all.
Also check out Lowes, their cabinets are about the same quality (IMO) as Ikea (maybe slightly better, but just based on taste) and you have a LOT more options, and it def won't cost you $60K, you can def do it for a lot less.

Re: kitchen remodel budget
And I don't know if this is true, but I always hear designers on tv say that getting cabinets from a custom cabinet maker is almost always cheaper then the big box stores- probably more then ikea, but less then Home Depot. If I had known that then, I would have at least looked into it. I love the look of our cabinets, but my poor DH broke his ass putting those damn things together.

We have such limited counter space - the corner is where it's always been and we're keeping it there, it's the best use of space!
LOVE Lowes & HD (it's the same product - Kraft Made) but we liked the gentleman who helped us at Lowes better (he reminded me of my uncle who was in construction his whole life).

Definitely NOT true... we've gotten so many quotes and the only custom ones that were cheaper than Lowes/HD the quality was so not anywhere close to what we want, they looked like they would fall apart in 1 year. We're planning on going the Lowes route, with their contractors - they call it "semi-custom" as it's ordered and designed to your specifications, and the contractors install & make sure all is perfect, but it's still from Lowes - with their standard cabinet options, but with Kraft Made they have so many different sizes, styles, options, it's basically exactly like getting something custom built.

Re: kitchen remodel budget
I'm just at the very beginning of the process. I've done a lot of renovation and whole heartedly agree that there are so many variables.
My kitchen is a direct replacement, but I am removing an atrium, which adds another 8-10k in construction costs.
I have a pretty good idea about what I want in terms of appliances and flooring . I'm budgeting 10-12k for this but this also includes new washer and dryer for my mud room which is off my kitchen.
I'm stuck on cabinets and whether I want granite or quartz. I'm leaning toward quartz. But cabinets continue to confuse me. I plan on pricing all options, including custom. I wish I had a better handle on actual cabinet construction and what that means in terms of quality.
Given, I have a good idea about most choices, I'm also questioning my need for a GC. I feel like I can coordinate the various contractors on my own. But who knows. As I said, I'm still confused.
Good luck with your project.

I have Kraft Maid but got them at Consumers. I priced them at Lowes and HD. HD wanted double the price with less extras. HD and lowes are Def not the cheapest around.
