L&D question

I've never been admitted to a hospital, all I know is what I see on TV.
Do you actually hear other women screaming while you are in labor?

i was in the ER about 2 months ago and because of that - they sent me to L&D to have Emma monitored for a short bit.

I heard NOTHING - it was SILENT up there!

i personally didn't, but i can see how you might be able to if the screaming was loud enough.

my OB actually had me believing that he heard me screaming from all the way down the hall... but a few hours later he told me he was kidding. i'm still not sure if it was true Chat Icon Chat Icon

Yes, I heard someone screaming & moaning across the hall.

I took it as a sign that the screaming & cursing birth wasn't for me. My husband took it as a sign that I should start pushing because she was going to have the baby before me. I looked at him & said "I'm not racing here!"

Some people are more vocal than others about pain.

I do think hospitals portray labor in the most ridiculous way. From my experience (2 births), it is a lot calmer & more mellow than that.

Re: L&D question

I'm an L&D nurse and you hardly ever hear other people screaming. Occasionally someone walks in just minutes away from delivery and yes they can cause quite a ruckus on the unit but it's over pretty quickly.

I had a c/s so I heard nothing but my BF had a similar experience. Her "neighbor" in the room next door was having a drug free birth, not only did she hear screaming but she said it sounded as if she was smashing somehtin against the wall.....

Obvioulsy not all drug free or v-births go that way but it could happen.

i was extremely embarrassed Chat Icon Chat Icon

i mean, i remember making some noise into my pillow, but i don't remember actually *screaming*... which leads me to believe that he really was kidding...

but i guess i'll never really know! Chat Icon

in the end, i think it's hard to know how you will react to the pain (since most of us have never felt that degree of pain before!). you just do the best you can... and then you leave with your beautiful baby and forget all about it Chat Icon

THANK GOD - my hospital has rules about that. I saw some of them (tour not until the 19th of may)....

You get like 3 - 5 bracelets and only people wearing those bracelets are allowed to come anywhere near you (not including husband, doula, etc.).... At some point - you can give them the rule - NO MORE BRACELETS and then NO ONE is allowed in the room.

Just wanted to clarify - both my deliveries were a drugfree v-birth too. They were pretty mellow deliveries.

I could see the point where the screaming would come into play because it definitely doesn't tickle.

Re: L&D question

The only screaming I heard were the cries of the newborn babies as they wheeled them up to the nursery.

Before and after I pushed with my second son, the woman next door was pushing and I could hear her. I felt terrible because I started and finished way before she was done. With DS #1 I heard nothing.

Re: L&D question

If your door is closed you wont hear anything. The day I delivered the room across from me had screamers all day. My nurse made sure my door was closed so i couldnt worry

Re: L&D question

Before I was given my labor room, they had me wait in another room. I kept going to the bathroom because my water broke and each time I overheard the lady next door, yelling and cursing at her her husband call him a "son of a b$#ch". I though it was so amusing. Chat Icon

Other then that I didnt hear anyone else.
