Labor room
It's a slow Friday, bear with me
When your laboring.. i.e. going through contractions, nurse checks to see if you are dialting, and effacing etc... will there be people in the room.. like your parents, in-laws? Or does the nurse shoo them away to the waiting area. I'm trying to figure this out..
I'd rather no one be there while being checked and stuff.. and giving me tips

Re: Labor room
The nurse never checked me for dilation, only the doctor did.
When the doctor comes in, if anyone is in your room, they are asked to leave to do an exam. If everything is ok and you are not ready to give birth, they are allowed back in.
Your nurses will tell you from the beginning that if at any time you want someone out of your room, to tell them and they will be the bad guy and kick them out.
Don't worry, not EVERYONE will see your hooha.

Re: Labor room
I think it depends on the hospital. I am delivering at Huntington and they don't even allow anyone but your spouse and one other co-coach (if you are having one) in while you are laboring.
I'm sure if you speak to the nurses in advance and tell them you would rather not have people in they will accomodate you.

Re: Labor room
I was allowed 2 people besides my DH. My mil stayed in the room, she left when I got check (my dr. kicked her out) and left when I started to push.

Re: Labor room
I don't have an issue my mom, its just that she is in the medical profession and I don't want her giving orders and calling for medications.. and then there's my MIL..

Re: Labor room
I was at Good Sam. Doctor did all the "checking" DH and my sister stayed...they would have been asked to leave if I requested it. Only person I shooed out was my Dad, but he already had a foot out the door when the doc said he was "checking" me, lol! If I didn't end up with a section DH and my sister would have been in until the very end when I delivered.

Re: Labor room
If you don't want anyone there, have DH tell the nurse, and she will be the bad guy-- she can blame it on hospital protocol or something. Then no one will have hurt feelings.

Re: Labor room
When I was laboring -- any time the doc came in to check my progress or a nurse to change the towels under me (since I was leaking so much fluid)...my parents and brother left the room.
Once the doc was done, they'd come back in and all was back to normal. You can ask people to leave or stay or whatever, it's your choice.
ETA: Had I gone through with a vaginal birth, they told us at Good Sam, that you could have up to 2 people in the room with you when you were pushing. Everyone else would have to go to the waiting room.

Totally what I'm going to do...
Thanks for bringing this up so I can be prepared. I would prefer just me and DH... DH would pretty much have it no other way. God knows I don't need any of that stress when I'm about to have a baby!!!

Re: Labor room
I plan on having whomever in the labor room.
But once the vag is out the people are leaving!!!
I'm not allowing anyone to see my vag!! I'm worried enough about shaving properly and the staff having to see my everything....

Re: Labor room
Nope. My parents live 5 minutes from the hospital. DH is calling them when it gets close to delivery time. ILs are insisting on staying in the waiting room. They can stay there the entire time or they can hang with my parents. There's something about them seeing me at my worst that I'm not comfortable with, especially since I plan on holding out as long as possible for the epi/trying to do it drug-free.

Re: Labor room
one your pushing-- no one will be there unless you want them to be. For me, it was DH and the nurse. When the baby was ready to come out, they call the doc in. They check you so infrequently up to that point-- everyone can just leave the room, depending on who is there.
