Lactation consultant recommendation?
Hi ladies-
We are having our third baby in July.
DS- was able to nurse him for almost six months but had HUGE issues in the beginning with his latch, over engorgement, major nipple pain. Had PPD and weaned him when I went on meds.
DD came when DS was only 16 months. She latched but I had TREMENDOUS over engorgement and nipple pain. PPD was swift and severe and I nursed her for five days only and went on meds.
This time around- I know that I probably will need the meds again and I am setting myself up proactively with a Rx. But, I feel like maybe if I can avoid the overengorgement and nipple pain- maybe, just maybe I can nurse longer if the PPD is more mild? I don't know- just want to talk to a level headed LC to tell her my issues to see if anything can be done to prepare.
Just got off the phone with one who told me PPD was because I was "mourning the lack of a vaginal birth".....
Anyone have any good recommendations? Also, I want someone who won't pressure me to keep nursing if I have to take the meds- DH and I prefer formula in that case.
TIA!!!
ETA: I'm thinking of using cold cabbage leaves on day 3 or 4 post partum- when my milk comes in full blast- also, the former LC that I used had me pump out the overengorment with a hospital grade pump that I rented. I think maybe that was overkill and I stimulated the milk production even more?
But the nipple pain was SO bad- contractions were better! I wonder if a good LC could help with these problems...

I saw Dr. Schaer. She's a LC and a pediatrician, so she takes insurance! She works out of Peconic Pediatrics in Riverhead.

Jennifer Giordano- She is through St Catherines. She is amazing! totally supportive and not judgmental at all. She has a group that she holds every Tues at 12 for BF moms. FM me if you want her info. There is another mom on here that used her as well.

Dr.Schaer is incredible. Peconic Ped has a Breast Feeding Center which she heads.
I have been dealing with a staph infection since DD was 2 weeks old (she is 7.5 months now). She has gone so far as to contact her associates around the country to help me, and she hasn't given up yet (stupid resistant bacteria lol) .
She also has an associate in New Hyde Park (I can't remember who but you can call Peconic Ped to ask).
Most LCs can't prescribe medication. You want to see a Dr./Do.
Good luck!

Re: Lactation consultant recommendation?
No recommendations but wanted to offer some "BTDT" advice.
I am currently nursing my twin girls. Never had an oversupply/engorgement issues with DS but major issues this time.
My girls are 5.5 weeks old and I have found pumping before nursing to get my breasts to be softer major help. Not only does it make it easier for them to latch but it also helps to build my freezer supply!
Good luck!
eta- I also had extreme nipple pain this time. It was totally due to bad latch. And once I figured out how to fix it, took nearly a day, we were smooth sailing once again.
