Landline prices with Verizon
Does anyone have a landline with Verizon and pay the SUPER basic rate?
I am curious as to how much it would cost me to have a phone installed in my new house a month. I don't plan on making any calls with it... just trying to figure out how much basic service costs with no extras after all the taxes.
We are getting free cable and phone through Cablevision... but my wife is advising me we should get a landline for our alarm system (she claims the iO Voice ***** with alarms).
I don't want to pay more than $20 a month for a phone I will never use.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
If anyone can share how much the basic part of their phone bill is (after taxes)... i would appreciate it. Nassau country residents would be a plus.
Somehow I don't trust Verizon in giving me an accurate quote over the phone if I ask them this.

Thanks. I am going to definitely consider this. But I may give the iO Voice a try first.
My wife said that a lot of her Cablevision techs are having issues with the Voice service... they saying it occasionally triggers a false alarm with your security system.
Strange.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
I don't have an answer about the basic verizon package but I have IO phone with my central station hooked up & its a PITA. My DH was away on business last week & my house alarm went off at 1:15am & scared the living CRAP out of me because IO phone lost its dial tone....it happens ALL the time. According to cablevision they do "upgrades" on the phone service in the night & knowingly shut down the dial tone in certain areas....I blew a gasket when I found out about this. I'm in the process of looking into direct tv, getting a verizon phone back & getting another internet provider. I'm so done with cablevision.

the basic - no frills local phone from verizon is about $6. Lets you make 20 calls for like 5 min or less each call.

Pretty much the same exact thing my wife said. She never bashes the company and usually says the iO Voice is great overall... even with E911. But she said it suks bad if you want to tie it to a security system. She said don't do it.

We have IO and Security! They currently have a something they are about to release (I think) also you could buy a battery back up CHEAP that would prevent this

WE have Verizon land line service too, but our bill also includes the DSL charge. We pay about $58 a month for both.

While Cablevision may "better" their Voice service to prevent this from happening... a battery backup would not solve this problem.
What happens is... Cablevision (like any other cable company) will frequently send out updated software to the cable boxes... and the cable modem as well. This will trigger the box to reboot itself... and could set off your security alarm in the middle of the night.
Juney: My wife directly works with the techs. This is a very common occurance. If it doesn't happen to you... then maybe they fixed a few things on the technical side now. But it is happening to quite a few people as my wife sees from looking at the daily technician's service call log.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
I also want to add that... the Cablevision Voice issue may be more "sensitive" to some Security providers than others.
For instance... a reboot of the cable box, or a loss of dial-tone due to a service outage may trigger an alarm with say Slomins... but that may not affect a Brinks system.
Who's to know. Trial and error I guess.

Yeah but one thing Mike does not know... is what types of calls are generally coming into dispatch.
Whether this will be fixed in the future or not... dispatch is still getting TONS of calls in regards to iO Voice and security systems.
Cablevision is starting to wise up. They are making all new customers who get Voice service sign a waiver saying that Cablevision can't get sued if voice service fails, e911 doesn't work, and that Voice may not work properly with security systems. Does Mike tell his clients they will have to sign a voice waiver to get service?
The last thing my wife wants me to do is spend unncessary cash. Plus, I hate Verizon with a PASSION. I refuse to give them any cash. But if Dispatch is still getting tens of hundreds of calls a week in regards to iO Voice and issues with security systems... the technology is simply not proven yet.

And you don't think my wife knows how to do her job and read a service ticket? Come on.
I won't deny that its never going to be fixed in the future. It probably will be. But the fact is... its not fixed right now.
If Mike knows that it will be fixed... why doesn't he elaborate in much more detail on what they plan on doing to "fix it".

Mike is doing this on the couch.. I posted on this thread all by myself ( I do that a lot im allowed) I overheard him saying something. I also heard what the guy from the security company said yesterday.
Im not sure what the comment about your wife and the service tickets ment I never said she didnt In fact I never said anything about her. You went onto say Mike works here and thats ALL he knows when really its not all he knows.. He talks to people and reads up on a lot of stuff thats all I was getting at.
NOW back down Killa

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
I got a little annoyed because I just don't understand how you can come out and simply call what I am saying inaccurate when my wife has the proof of tons of service calls on this subject.
I wouldn't believe what the security company says. They will say anything to sell their product. Its called 'sales'.
I would love to skip Verizon and just hook the iO up to the security system. But my wife is saying HELL NO based on tons of issues that dispatch is currently facing with the Voice service.
A poster on here has said the same thing happened to her. The problem is real and it exists.
Mike may know something about it getting fixed in the future. If he has concrete evidence that its getting fixed and knows how its getting fixed... then I will be more than happy to save some buks a month.

Maybe im overtired and I didnt say it right.
Did I SAY that it doesnt happen I DONT THINK I DID! I KNOW it happens! Ive heard it happen before the above poster even said it.
did I say you are a liar I DONT THINK I DID!
Forgive me if I am wrong but im 99% positive that cablevison is WORKING on somthing to fix the problem ( I thought I said that... Didnt I said they were coming out with something meaning not out YET)
I *thought* a battery backup could control this problem could I be wrong SURE I dont work for the company and neither do you!
P.S. about the security system they are already PAID for a few months and have made there SALE ...

I may not be a Cablevision employee... but I have been working with battery backup devices longer than Cablevision has even offered Voice service.
The only thing a battery backup will do is give you phone service if your house suffers a power outage. It will most definitely not correct the issue with the security system if it triggers the alarm from a cable box firmware download.
I'll definitely agree with you when you say that Cablevision wants to fix this problem and I am sure they are working on it.
If Mike knows something that may be on the horizon... I am always interested in learning more and maybe he can explain what they plan on doing in more detail.
But I am currently ****** at Mike right now cause he wasn't able to give me an answer on SportsNetNY. LOL

OK but what I dont understand about that is if the battery back up is giving you a phone during power outage and the security goes through the phone well modem whatever) then how do you have a phone and not security if the security is going through the phone

My wife is saying that something Cablevision is doing is causing some security systems to occasionally trigger a false alarm in the middle of the night.
Lets face it... things can happen if the power goes out... and a power battery backup MAY correct that.
But from what the above poster said about her experience... it sounds like a cable box firmware upgrade (which happens on occasion and usually happens overnight say between midnight and 5am)... has in the past triggered a security alarm. She did not have a power outage.
I don't know the technical reason why its happening... I just know its happening.
A battery backup IMO is a very good investment to have. I have a professional battery backup system that can power my entire entertainment system including my plasma. I can watch TV for hours during a complete backout if I wanted to. This is a great product... but it probably won't help the security problem thats being discussed here.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
See that little box on the bottom right next to my plasma stand. It has a red LED light on it. Thats my battery backup. Its huge and weighs a TON (like 50-60 lbs).
Thats professional stuff... that can power my entire living room if I wanted.
Believe me... if a battery backup would fix the security problem... it wouldn't be an issue.

we have a very basic plan, no call-waiting or anything like that. no long distance plan - bill is around 25 a month. we try not to use it cause it is 9¢ a phone call. I wish the bill was more like 10$ since we pay 100$ in cell phone bills. - I wanted to get just in-coming phone calls, but they will not do that.
