Re: Landline prices with Verizon
DJ,
I have the "basic" verizon package and it's about $22.00/month. We got OptVoice when we moved into our new home, but I need a second line for my business and wanted to keep the same number. Both lines go through my structured panel in my basement. When ADT went in to install the alarm system, they tied it into the Verizon line. This was two years ago when OptVoice just started out. I have my own UPS for my equipment (including the cable modem).

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
I don't have Opt Voice so I can't speak to their issues, but my alarm company (as did my friend's) sent us a letter SPECIFICALLY requesting that you keep a landline for the alarm system if you are going to use VOIP. My system (and I believe most) are set up that if you lose your dial tone a signal is IMMEDIATELY sent to dispatch as the assumption is that a burglur has cut your phone line and trying to disable your system. We had the police show up over the summer when a Verizon tech accidentally turned off our phone line at the pole and tripped the system. They had meant to turn off someone who had moved out's line and got ours instead.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
we have OV and as Pill mentioned, the salesman said we should have no problems. obviously it was a sales pitch if there are SO many people having issues w/ IO and their security systems. i am going to look into a landline as well.
dumb question but can OV trip an alarm if the alarm is not set? DH rewired the house after the alarm was installed and the only call we received is to ask about a low battery signal.

I am really not sure. I am sure there are plenty of people out there that have absolutely no issues with it.
But my wife was saying that there are a good amount of people that have had their security alarms start blaring in the middle of the night out of nowhere.
If I can get that $6 a month plan that the poster on page 1 said... I will do that. $6 a month is more than worth it for the peace of mind on this.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
Somehow, I just don't think you can get Verizon for $6 a month. I could be wrong, but when I called last year, I told them I wanted the basic basic and I think they told me it was about $15 or something. And then add on taxes and surcharges and the rest of the crap, and I imagine it's closer to $20. But, I'm not saying for sure, that is just what I was told last year. Please let us know if you check into it and they do have it for $6. I would maybe hook up a landline for that too.

My husband works for Verizon so I know they have it - but you may have to call back a few times to get it. Not all of the reps know about it, but it really does exist. You want the plan that will let you make 20 calls a month for 5 minutes or less.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
pill, with some companies like nextalarm, you can buy an internet adapter. this will allow all commiciations to go though the internet vs. a phone line. this what i plan on doing ...

Maybe... but again you are making your security system rely on a technology that can go down at times (a lot more than you lose Verizon dialtone).
And I just said in the other thread... what will happen if a crook decides to locate your cable line outside your house and cut it before he decides to enter and steal all your stuff.

Re: Landline prices with Verizon
Hmmm...
We just got a security system hooked up a couple of weeks ago and we have Digital phone. We've lost a dial tone and the system never went off? Of course they told us that having a digital phone wouldn't be a problem, just that if the power went out so would the alarm system. It does have an 8 hour battery backup though, I don't know if that helps or not? I do live in NC and have Time Warner Cable and Brinks Security. They told us that even if the power goes out the alarm won't go off. I don't know. This is just how it's been working for us. Good luck!
