Lasik - with update -another update with question
2nd update:
Question: It will be a week tomorrow... Eyes feel very dry and itchy but look good (still bloodshot but not worse than it was) Going back to Doctor Monday afternoon. I am using the drops for dryness which helps in the moment but I need them often- this is normal right? Eyes feel better in morning than afternoon+ and towards the end of the day feel like I have had contacts in way too long that I just can't wait to take out. I think this is all probably normal but I am nervous. For those of you that had it - did you feel this too?
Update:
Hi :) Its Sunday, I had Lasik Friday. Using sunglasses for computer- still somewhat sensitive to lights. outside I see halos but I hope/expect that to go away. Yesterday's dr visit said sight was 20/20 and he expects it will "get even better." My eyes are bloodshot (not the veiny kind- they are pure redish/purple) I am having trouble sleeping and my eyes are very dry. lots of drops. The procedure itself was more uncomfortable than I thought it would be, there was only one moment of pain-like a pinch. The half valium they gave me did NOTHING for me. The teddybear they offered me to hold brought more comfort than anything else and I squeezed him super tight the entire procedure. 3 hours after there was a lot of burning but after those initial hours I felt much better. yesterday my eyes were just dry and felt like something was in them at times. the drops help. I could have drove yesterday if I really wanted! but I kind of felt like I had new glasses on and was not adjusted to them yet. My mom went earlier in the week and had a complication that the lasik could not be completed so now her eye has to heal before she tries again, so I was extra nervous with her experience (different doctor/same center.)
I went to Dr. Donnenfeld in Rockville Center/ and the procedure was done in Garden City TLC - everyone was wonderful.
Overall I recommend it, no regrets at this time, but not when you have something big coming up! I am worried by the time my mom's eye heals it will be too close to may when we have a wedding and she may be too dry, uncomfortable or red eye like mine! It can take a few weeks for this redness to go away.
Thanks for all the support and encouragement.
__________________ Hi,
I am scheduled for Lasik soon and having second thoughts- just nervous. Can anyone share experiences with this procedure, either you or someone you know?
Thanks!

Re: Lasik
Anyone I know who has had it done has said that 1) it was the best thing they ever did 2) couldn't believe how they were able to see perfect right away and 3) that they wish that they had done it sooner.

Re: Lasik
i had lasik done last june and it was the best thing i ever did! didn't regret it for a second!
the entire procedure took at most 15 minutes. they give u a pill if u want (i forgot which one... maybe valium?) to calm ur nerves before the procedure. u go into the room where the machine is, lie down and do the lasik one eye at a time. didn't hurt at all, u dont feel a thing!
FM if u have any questions!

I aree on all points! My dh and a friend of mine came to watch the procedure. Honestly, I think it was more uncomfortable for THEM to watch it than it was for me to have it. It was over in minutes. I went home, took a nap, and woke up being able to see! Best feeling ever!

good luck! i am surprised by how well i can see. Right now I feel like I have had contacts in too long and i am dying to take them out (like dry and strained) but its worth it so far. one of my eyes is more red than the other - I hope you have no redness for Easter too but its not so bad. I 'll let you know when it goes away..although everyone is different.

Re: Lasik - with update
I have a few questions. A few of you said it was worth every penny - about how much does it cost? I'm guessing none of the cost is covered by insurance. Also, has anyone had it done with (former) prescription of -8 or worse? I am -8.25 in contacts and -9 in glasses and have always been told the results should be pretty good but that my eyes could deteriorate again down the road and I would still need some correction. I don't want to do it if its going to be a waste. Thanks!!!

Hi, I am exactly not sure what my prescription was. I vaguely remember my contacts years ago being -5. something and its changed since then I know. I went in thinking even if I still needed glasses, the prescription wouldn't be as strong so the glasses wouldn't be as expensive as they have been. Between the prescription glasses and the sunglasses each year I was paying hundreds so I think in the long run it will pay off. I know people who have it and as they got older need reading glasses. My mom is going to have it done but will still need reading glasses. I don't know of any insurance doesn't cover it. I think most doctors do a correction/enhancement within a year of surgery no charge. Most doctors give a free consultation just so you can learn more about it and if you are a candidate. You can find a doctor to do it for 3000 both eyes but my and my mom's doctor was around 5300. I got a no-interest two year payment plan so its only 220 a month.

My insurance doesn't cover any of it. Mine will cost $3700. My prescription is -5.25 and -5.75 and hasn't changed in years.
The doctor did tell me that by the time most people reach 40, our eyes change and we need reading glasses. He also said I can have an adjustment later on if my eye sight begins to not be 20/20 any more. To me, it's so worth it. I cannot wait to not have to wear contacts or glasses anymore!

you will love it. my eyes weren't red at all after, like someone else said i went home took a nap and woke up and could see! and 4 years later, it's still the best thing i ever did.
there is dryness and the little drops they make specifically for that are lifesavers, but again years later the dryness is pretty much gone! good luck to both of you.

When I had it done I think I paid about $5000. No, none was covered by insurance but if you your company has a flex spending account, I think you can use that.
If I remember correctly, my prescription contacts was , like -9.25 in one eye and maybe around -9. in the other. The one that was worse is still not quite as strong as the other, but I do not wear any glasses - and I've gone to my opthomologist and he always tells me "well, I could give you a prescription but really, you don't need it."
Your eyes could always get worse - but that is why before doing it they recommend that your eyes should have been stable for a few years already. And likely I will need reading glasses at some point as I age, but the freedom that comes with waking in the morning and being able to see the clock across the room or going to the beach and not having to worry about losing a contact in the waves is amazing!
