I agree. What was the name of that drug that they gave pregnant women years ago for morning sickness? That they found out years later that caused other problems for the child? All because they jumped the gun in distribution.
Not enough long term studies in my opinion.
I'm not sure of the name, but that's exactly what I was thinking!!!
I could see people taking a risk on a drug without long term testing if you are struggling with the illness already. (ie. AIDS medication, etc) But to take a preventative drug, when you don't have the disease... not worth the risk for me.
Completely agree!!

I think that providing the vaccine to those who want it is a WONDERFUL idea.
I have a MASSIVE PROBLEM with making it mandatory.
I agree.

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
In theory, its a great idea.
However, considering most insurance doesn't pay for it yet because its too new, there are a lot of issues about it.
(1) who will pay? I know my insurance company doesn't cover it.
(2) how safe is it really? Now I am all for vaccinations, but if its not covered by insurance yet, that makes me a little nervous.

Thalittamide?
Yeah, I think that's it.

Sadly I remember it from that Billy Joel song "We Didn't Start the Fire"...There's that part "Children of Thalidomide"....Sad. My life revolves around pop culture!!

My concern is that lawmakers are trying to pass a bill making it mandatory for all schoolgirls to get this vaccine. I'm not comfortable with that...Especially in light of the fact that there are no long term studies as to the affect of this drug.
I agree. What was the name of that drug that they gave pregnant women years ago for morning sickness? That they found out years later that caused other problems for the child? All because they jumped the gun in distribution.

That was thalidomide and it caused serious physical defects (missing limbs and such).
After they do enough testing on the side effects and ensure that this is a safe vaccination, it will be a wonderful thing. I'd rather take a few shots than go through any of the procedures I've undergone with HPV.

Some conservatives and parents'-rights groups say such a requirement would encourage premarital sex and interfere with the way they raise their children.
I dont understand how a vaccine could encourage premarital sex and interfere with raising a child.....
Other than long term effects, I think they should also include this among the vaccines required to enroll in college
Just so we're clear, I C&P'd this from Fox 5, that is in no way my opinion. I totally don't think it would encourage kids to have sex.
Yup, just responding to the original article.

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
I'm just so glad there is a vaccine (not sure if I agree with mandatory vaccination, because of the reasons stated above...uncertainty of long term studies, etc)
That being said, HPV is an epidemic: my OB/GYN recently told me that 80% of women in their 50s have HPV.
My MIL just found out that her cancer has returned...it's now in her pelvis, and is from HPV.

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
If it's proven to be totally safe, I'd support it. Kids in my school don't get sex ed, they don't always learn from their parents (and sometimes the parents are bad role models in that department ) so anything that protects young women gets my vote.
My grandmother died of cervical cancer at age 31. There's been a lot of progress made since then, vaccine or not, but I still believe that any preventative measures should be fully explored and offered to as many people as possible.

I agree with most of the women here who mentioned long-term side effects. I also have a problem with mandating a drug that is only manufactured and distributed by a single company. I can't say that it's bad that it's only one company, it just bothers me. I know they have to recoup their research and development costs, but to make their product mandatory?

THIS IS AWESOME!! Imagine 1 day there will HOPEFULLY be a vaccine for ALL cancer
ETA: for those of you questioning this, what are the long term effects of measles, small pox and other vaccines which are mandated?

As far as I know, there are no long term affects, but we don't know what the long term affects of the Gardisal vaccine would be. It hasn't been around long enough...

I highly doubt that they are trying to make it a mandatory vaccination just to recoup their costs. This disease affects such a large percentage of the population and sometimes - as is the case with me - you could be walking around with it for YEARS and not know it! I don't even want to think of what my fate could have been because I only just found out I have this. A vaccine while I was still in highschool would have prevented it all.
I'm all for studying the side effects before releasing it to the public, but HPV is so widespread I think making it a mandatory vaccine is necessary.

I agree with this as well. Admittedly I don't know that much about this vaccine but it JUST recently came on the market so how much can they really know about it? I know that I am very cautious with getting things that haven't been on the market for long enough to see all the potential side effects. I really fear that it is the drug company lobby looking for $$$$ that is motivating something like this :(

Gardasil is Merck's vaccine. Glaxosmithkline has a vaccine in the works called Cervarix, which should be ready by the end of the year.
Wikipedia has some interesting info. According to the article, it's less widespread in the US than it used to be, but 4,000 women a year still die of it. Worldwide, it's the second most common women's cancer and the third deadliest (after breast and lung.) So this vaccine could do good for many, not just here.

Doesn't a company have to perform extensive tests for years before being allowed to put a drug (or vaccine) on the market? I agree we may not know the full extent of the long term side effects yet, but it's not as though the vaccine hasn't been studied for its effects.
IMO, it seems like a great preventive measure. I also think if it were optional, the girls most at risk might not get the vaccine either b/c they don't think they'll get HPV or their parents don't think their kids are having sex.

I absolutely agree with this.... what if my (hypothetical) daughter decided she never wanted to have sex in her life....why should she be required to take a mandatory vaccine for a sexually related disease, unless anyone can correct me isn't HPV only transmitted through sex

Im all for it. I am going to get my daughter it. She is 11. It is like all other vaccines. Chicken pox, polio, etc. Its preventative. There are risks with any vaccine. Cervical cancer can be deadly and is hard to diagnos.

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
Gardasil website
Someone posted that they wanted it: GARDASIL is for girls and women ages 9 to 26.
I think this is why a lot of us are hesitant to run to a vaccine, or any drug without a history:
Vioxx (made by Merck & Co) was approved as safe and effective by the FDA on May 20, 1999. On September 30, 2004, Merck voluntarily withdrew it from the market because of concerns about increased risk of heart attack and stroke associated with long-term, high-dosage use.

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
I thought that the required shots for children relate more to diseases that could easily spread in schools.
And, if this bill becomes law, then the entire drug industry gets the message, once again, that their lobbying really works. Merck stands to make out quite nicely on a deal like this.
