I think that providing the vaccine to those who want it is a WONDERFUL idea.
I have a MASSIVE PROBLEM with making it mandatory.
TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!!
The thought of forcing and making it mandatory sickens me!

I think they should get the shot.... but is there a study on the long term effects..... is it completely safe? I think all women should be able to get it.
This is exactly my concern, as well.

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
The vaccine was created 18 years ago. thats how long its been tested before approved. When I had cervical cancer 6 years ago they had promised "any day" it would be out...
This is a great idea.
Its a vaccine, just like any other vaccine, and your child has a higher chance of cervical cancer then the mumps or rubella.
Another reason I am for mandatory vaccines of this nature of because of how the HPV virus is spread...A girl could spread it to a man who spreads to ten-20 more women in his lifetime and at least ONE of those women will get cervical cancer...all because I choose NOT to vaccinate my own child? No way, it should be mandatory.

Still not entirely convinced. Sorry. The drug companies are HUGE...the repurcussions of all of this could be disastrous (sp). There's a part of me that wants to jump on board but at the same time, there's this thought. There is still no cure for breast cancer...a cancer with about 1,000 times more fighting for from the general public, more awareness made, more funds raised...where's THIS vaccine? Where's THIS cure? I'm just slightly suspicious why the next generation of girls is getting a vaccine...call me a conspiracy theorist, but there are some things that make you go hmmm.

I thought that the required shots for children relate more to diseases that could easily spread in schools.
And, if this bill becomes law, then the entire drug industry gets the message, once again, that their lobbying really works. Merck stands to make out quite nicely on a deal like this.
YES!!! Not to mention have we forgotten Roe V. Wade??? Since when is it right for the government to decide what's right for women's bodies???
I just feel like this type of legislation is only taking us one step closer to big brother.
I understand the goodness this vaccine could provide (and for only SOME strains of HPV per their website #'s 6, 11, 16 & 18) but I just don't feel it's been tested long enough and proven close to completely safe (nothing is completely safe) to be a mandatory vaccine.

I agree... I work for a pharmaceutical company. Believe me, it's all about the $$$$$. Don't fool yourself.
Pfizer did not come out with Viagra b/c they felt bad for guys with ED. They knew it would be a HUGE seller. Clearly, they were on point.

Because HPV virus is MUCH more prevelant then breast cancer.
And its obviously a much more treatable cancer ( cervical) based on the treatment success rates so it makes sense that the vaccine would be much easier to create no?

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
And I would like to know if anyone posting whos against it has had cervical cancer?
I did and I can tell you now, 6 years later, after it took me over 2 years and $15K to have a baby, I wouldnt wish it on your daughter or anyone else.
And I want MY son protected from your daughter who didnt get the vaccine so he cant pass it on to someone else.
This is about the spread of HPV, not curing cancer.

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
Why are people SO against this? I mean, I understand that people are afraid that it will have effects that no one knows about, but they test drugs WAY more than they did in the 50's and 60's.
I think that everyone SHOULD be vaccinated against HPV. My SMIL had my two teenage SIL's vaccinated. We know someone struggling with this right now and it could have been prevented. These are things that will help people, not hurt them!

Re: Lawmaker Wants New York Schoolgirls to Get Cervical Cancer Vaccine
I'm not saying that it's bad and that I'm against it, but I think it's good to question these things. I'm not about to inject myself or my daughter with something that I don't know enough about. I'm sure it's a great thing, but I'd like to see more information on it before I get in line for it.

I'm not against the vaccine itself, I'm concerned that the gov't. is trying to step in and make it mandatory. I'm just not comfortable with that.

I'm sorry that you had cervical cancer and certainly wouldn't wish it on anyone. But you do realize that this vaccine isn't a guarentee that those vaccinated won't get HPV or cervical cancer. They still state that you should still get regular exams (pap tests) because this vaccine isn't the end all cure for the spreading of HPV.

Of course, there are sooo many different strains of the virus, but it couldnt hurt.
I understand peoples fear of using something "new" and having it "forced" on them. I feel the same way about some of the vaccines children get for diseases we havent seen in many many years, but I think some people dont think about what it all really means, how long this has been developed and why its needed before they jump to assume its all a conspiracy
I do see both sides of the story

I am not opposed to this but it should wait until the vaccine isn't as new (and get rid of the kinks)
