Learning a different language
Both my kids started in seventh grade. I'm not really sure if its the same in every public school. Private school is likely different.

Re: Learning a different language
We live OOS but DS is learning spanish in kindergarten. It's one of their "specials" like art, music, technology, etc.

Re: Learning a different language
We are in Long Beach and my kids are learning Spanish starting in kindergarten. The teacher comes to their classroom every 6 days or so.

Learning a different language
I think they start in middle school in my district. They really should start in K. That's when learning a language is the best -- as a small child! By middle school, it's almost too late!

Re: Learning a different language
The kids start in kindergarten. We have French and Spanish. Whichever u get assigned to, they stick with until middle school and then can choose a different language. We are in NJ

Re: Learning a different language
Pre-K, they start with Italian. When they get to middle school they take Italian and Latin.

Learning a different language
My friend is a Spanish teacher. For a few years her district was starting Spanish in kindergarten but now they are moving away from that and starting in 4th or 5th grade (not sure which one)

Re: Learning a different language
I teach at a Dual Language school in NYC - 1 group of kids start the program in K (though some slide in in 1st too, when there are spaces available) and continue in the program with the same group of children through 5th grade and the hope is that they will go to a DL program in middle school/high school.
B/c I'm a teacher, I never get a chance to go to my sons' schools so I don't know if they teach it in elem..but my Stepson had a choice of languages in high school.

Learning a different language
Every district is different. My district doesn't offer language until middle school. DD attends private school so she has been getting language since pre-k. She got 1/2 year Spanish, 1/2 year French. For K-2 she gets Spanish and Mandarin, and for 3-5 she gets French and Mandarin. After that she chooses between Spanish and French.

Re: Learning a different language
My district does not offer a second language until middle school. However, there are enrichment programs you can sign up for that will teach languages (as well as other topics). They are held on Saturday mornings and start in 3rd grade.

Learning a different language
Our school district starts dual language in kindergarten--which is optional. However I haven't been impressed with the amount of Spanish my friend's children have learned by the end of fourth grade.
