Legal or Illegal apartment
How can you tell? Looking today at a few apartments and the landlords are saying it's legal. How do I check to see if it's true or not?

Re: Legal or Illegal apartment
I wouldn't know how to check...Normally there are signs....if utlilies are included- huge flag for illegal
I have never been in a legal apartment in a house on long island
In queens I have...own mail box, own electric meter

Re: Legal or Illegal apartment
There are many towns that allow legal apartments on LI. I'm in one in Lindenhurst. You can call the town itself to verify.

Re: Legal or Illegal apartment
do they tell you how you can pay? If they want cash or a check to cash - it's illegal.

Why can't you pay cash on a legal apartment?
My friend has a legal 2 family in West Babylon, and he can most definitely accept cash on his rental.
The legality of the apartment has to due with what the town says, not with how you pay. In Nassau County you can easily look it up on mynassauproperty.com and see how many living units the town says it has.

Of course you can pay cash for a legal apartment but when a landlord will only accept cash, it can be an indication that it's an illegal apartment.

Re: Legal or Illegal apartment
If the LL is telling you its a legal apt then ask him for the permit #. If it is legal they have to have a CO for it and the town usually has a accessory apt # assigned to it.
