Does anyone know who I can call to report an illegal apartment?

You have to call your town. They will send you paperwork that must be filled out and sent back.

What town do you live in?
In Huntington Township and Smithtown Township you call the towns Public Safety Office and make a complaint. It can be over the phone and you dont have fill out anything or submit anything.

Call the town or write a letter – long story short – my parents neighbor has a illegal apartment and the other neither wrote a letter to complain but put the wrong house address and the two showed up at my parents door accusing them of having an illegal apartment

most towns have all of their info on their websites, and most town depts have their own sites under the umbrella town site.

same here. i don't think you realize the lives you will affect. plus, if you had an illegal apt to rent, you wouldn't want someone reporting you. please think about speaking to your neighbors first.

most legal apartments are extremely expensive for the average single person or family making less then $40K a year
illegal apartments often include utilites- which makes it much more affordable
I have always rented in LEGAL apartments - but 1 bedrooms in the building I have lived in started at $1400 a month PLUS utlities- not every one can afford that
there is a huge shortage of affordable apartments (and housing) on Long Island- b/c everyone has the "Not in my back yard" attitude

I did too but I was in the apartment for 3 years. I'm sure if it was a steady tenant that caused no problems, it wouldn't be an issue.

Here's the deal then- if there are constantly rotating tenants, then it lowers MY property value. And sorry- I don't want transient people in and out of my neighborhood.
We don't know if the OP already talked to the landlord. And honestly, WHAT will the landlord say if she DOES talk to him?
This is the risk people run by renting an illegal apartment......

Sorry but I don't agree with this.
What is speaking to the neighbors going to accomplish? They aren't going to stop renting.
I can't believe people here can condone renting out illegal apartments. So it's now "ok" to rent an illegal apartment just because legal apartment's are too much money?
So it's "not fair" to the family that lives in the apartment? Maybe it's not fair to my friend who pays 12k in taxes because he went through the process of LEGALIZING his upstairs rental.
Illegal apartments are not right no matter how you try to spin them.

I have an illegal apartment and I don't see anything wrong with it. Maybe part of it is that it's a friend and he's been here for almost 3 years. He doesn't pay utilities, but his rent/contribution covers our home taxes. And in fairness, they could never get me on the "illegal" part because we are friends/roomates if anyone asked. There is a door at the bottom on the stairs and it's never locked, so we're free to walk into each other's places whenever. I'd be furious if someone tried to report me. But that's just my honest opinion on the matter.

I think this is an entirely different situation as this person is a long term renter and a personal friend. The lines between "renter" and "roomate" are too blurred.

It's not a matter about caring what others do. But when what others do infringes on my rights and comfort as a homeowner, then I should have a say on what goes on in my neighborhood.
The OP was complaining about constantly rotating tenants. You don't see a problem with that?
