Let's discuss sign language

I am just starting to look into signing with baby. He is still so young but I started 2-3 signs and he pays attention to my hands so much!! I searched and read some old threads. I would love to speak to other moms who are doing this or have done it.

There was a girl who was deaf at my summer camp when I was a kid. I really only learned a few words, plus the alphabet to speak to her. So I would first have to learn the signs to teach my baby.

I have a friend who is proficient but I never asked her whether she signs with her babies.

I want to teach him ASL, not a made up language. I have a pocket version of a baby signing book but I may need something more. What programs use ASL? Does Baby Einstein? Does anyone know of any live classes? My mom asked if it delays speech. I do not see how or why it would. I say the word as I sign it, so if anything I reinforce what he learns.

Re: Let's discuss sign language

DS learned some sign language in speech therapy when he was little. I'm surprised he still remembers a lot of it.

Check your local library, I know ours offers a baby signing class.

It is amazing what children remember. I am amazed that I remember the ASL alphabet from when I was a child. I am going to check but I never noticed it in the offerings at my library.

Sign Language definitely doesn't delay speech. It helps with the child's comprehension as well as gives them a way of communicating before they are ready to say those first words. I say go for it! There are plenty of books and videos out there that you can use to find basic vocabulary. At such a young age you don't need to learn the whole "language" since you wouldn't be modeling full sentences to your child yet.

I also should clarify... ASL is American Sign Language, which has a completely different grammatical structure from English. You probably just want to sign along with your spoken language, which is really Signed English (or sometimes known as Total Communication).

Hope that helps!

Re: Let's discuss sign language

I started at 3 months with DS. They say to start at 8 months.

We use about 7 words or so by now.

milk
eat
sleep
bed
more
no more
etc...

We have to be REALLY careful when saying the word or "signing" them. It can't do "milk" or "eat" until we are really ready. He will start crying because he wants to eat.

He does not sign back yet but he is only 7.5 months

I bought the "Sign with your Baby" by Dr. Joseph Garcia.

It's actual ASL. Unlike the "baby sign" method. There is a book and video for demo of the signs.

I would love to learn actual ASL. Not just a few signs and teach DS at the same time.

I know what you mean about focusing on your hands! I started showing DD the sign for "milk" and she stares at each hand like she's getting it! Chat Icon

You should only do the sign when you are giving her milk.

Are these different methods but with the same signs? Right now I want to start slowly with some helpful words. I want to take a little bit at a time but if my child and I can eventually learn the language that would be great.

Re: Let's discuss sign language

I started a few signs w/ Gracie about a month ago (yet not sure if she'll get it b/c my MIL/mom don't do it when she is w/ them) but I've done:

eat
drink
no
sleep
more

w/ her.

She gets so excited when I do it...she starts smiling & stares at my hands.

I only taught Jordana two signs, and it took her a while to do it, but it stuck with her for a year. Long after she started talking she woudl sign too.

Re: Let's discuss sign language

ASL and Signed English essentially use the same signs (e.g. the sign for milk, mother, done, and more are the same). However, ASL has a completely different grammatical order from signed English (no subject-verb agreement, object+action becomes action+object). Signed English follows the same grammatical rules as spoken English. ASL is totally different- but again, the SIGNS are the same.

For those of you who want to teach your children ASL, you yourselves must become proficient at ASL and its specific grammatical rules as well.

Re: Let's discuss sign language

My DD learned a bunch of sign's from Baby Einstein's First Signs DVD. She uses them everyday. She knows and uses milk, help, more, story, ball, bath and cereal. She is 16 months now but we started watching the DVD at about 8 months. She loves it!

We also have Baby Einstein's Baby's Favorite Places and the DVD has so many signs for things in the neighborhood. The other day she started signing "driveway". It was just so random...she doesn't "know" what it means but it was just funny!

I better watch out if I ever flip anyone the bird. She is a master at copy-catting in an instant!Chat Icon

I bought a ton of books with every intention of signing with my kid.. but it just never happened.

Waving bye-bye is a sign. We also have the Baby Einstein DVD, and she started saying and signing the word "ball" at the same time. I guess for my kid it's really selective what she decides to pick up. She's talking now, so I've let it go entirely.

My cousin taught her kids some basic signs. I'm not sure how she did it - but they always watched these videos - Signing Time with Alex and Lea. They were great.

Re: Let's discuss sign language

Alex learned sign language. The infant center at our school instructs all the teachers in sign, so they are fairly proficient, and they bring in a sign language teacher three times a week to teach a sign class, to music, with the babies.

She had a full repertoire of signs long before she could ever really utter a word. I can't even begin to tell you how much it helped mitigate tantrums and frustration because she could tell us when she was hungry, thirsty, had a dirty diaper, etc.

Yes, she did experience a *slight* delay in language, but only a month or two her peers who weren't in her class with her. But, by the time she caught up, she was way above and beyond. And, she even still uses her sign language for things like more, milk, please, thank you, etc.

Re: Let's discuss sign language

I sign a few basic words for Alex - but she doesn't seem to get it yet. Like when I ask if she wants to eat, she doesn't freak out.

But I'll keep doing it - while I speak to her in Spanish...Chat Icon

Re: Let's discuss sign language

St. Charles has a class I believe. My friend is a sign language interpreter. I've asked her why she doesn't have classes teaching baby signing and she said there is already someone in the deaf community doing it (interpreter). FM me if you want me to ask her for the person who does it.

Re: Let's discuss sign language

I know i posted awhile ago, before i had DS, but i am an ASL teacher, at all levels. HS, Elem. college and adult ed. There are some really great books out there for children, i especially like the series "Early Sign Language Series" they have several different topics, and they are board books. You can find them on hearmore.com another great place to get resourses is harriscomm.com if you click on baby on the left, tons of books/movies/cds come up.

Once before i said i would love to have a gtg that focused on baby sign, and now that my DS is 5 mos, i would love to do it. As summer gets closer, and enough people want to, i would be more than glad to do it.

My DS is 5mos and he doesnt sign back to us yet, except the sign for dog. but we sign with him 24/7 i really cant wait for those little hands to sign "mommy" as they make up for never hearing him cry.
