I have none of these right now. But I have read information on them on the storyboard on this site. You might want to do a search on there.

Re: Let's talk Kindle or similar devices!
We just bought FIL the Nook for fathers day (didn't give it to him yet). DH compared it to the kindle. It was a bit cheaper, and has some features that the kindle doesn't have (and kindle has some features the Nook doesn't). With the Nook you get free 3G (I believe) and you can preview books for an hour inside barnes and noble.

I have the Sony Reader and love it!
You can upload pictures to it, so I don't see why you would not be able to view reference pictures.
Happy Reading!

I am fairly sure that any text and pictures that were in the reference book to begin with are in the download. It's hard to describe - I have the nook, and you don't feel like you are reading a computer screen, it feels like you are reading an actual paper book. It's called E Ink - it's an electronic paper display.
If you go here you can compare the Kindle and the nook. As far as I know the other products out there like the Sony reader don't offer the same features yet.
I love my nook, there are times I forget it's not a "real' book and go to turn the page instead of clicking on the arrow!

Re: Let's talk Kindle or similar devices!
I have the nook and cant believe I lived without it! I read all day long since I am out of work. I had doubts about whether I'd like reading on a screen but it really looks just like a book page.
My DH bought it for me for a bday/anniver. gift and he read the reviews on all of them and liked the nook the best. He said the sony had the worst reviews but I have never used it so I can't compare.
A guy on the train today say my nook and said he has the kindle and that my nook had a crisper screen but then again mine is new and his is an older version of the kindle.
I think too the nook fits my hands nicely so it might be a personal preference.....maybe go play with all of them since they are available in stores now.

I'm waiting to check out the Kobo - supposed to come out at the end of the month.
Only 150, but no wireless (not a big deal for me - rather save 100 bucks)

I have the Kindle and I love it. I can see photos from the books I download but they are in black and white. I've been reading so much and I get the NYTimes on the Kindle every day.

I don't have a Kindle or similar...but I have a beef.
I love to see what people are reading on the train. It gives me ideas. But when they are using Kindles, I have no idea what anyone's reading and I'm not nervy enough to ask.

I'm absolutely obsessssssssed with my kindle.
My only issue is that I need a lightweight case. Anyone have any recs? The one I have is heavy and weighs down my bag.

Me, too! But I am a little envious of the Nook, it looks a little snazzier. But I will say this, I feel like I'm reading a book when I have my Kindle. And it was a gift, so I can't complain

Great point! Never even thought of this..as I obnoxiously read my Nook
Nook rocks..love it.
I know the Kindle is similar.
I hear about a book and want it NOW..so for me the Nook is awesome..download, read, enjoy!

Re: Let's talk Kindle or similar devices!
Thank you for all the replies!
I am kind of excited about this. I found out last night that my library offered the ebooks/downloads. That would be great for novels.
I don't have time to go to the library.
It's free (I assume!) to download from the library.
It won't take so much room and clutter on bookcases.
Looks like it's either the Kindle or the Nook. Both seem to have fans. So more research it is!
Do the libraries only offer downloads on either the nook or the kindle or is it for ALL devices?
How does that work? You download on your home computer then you download to the nook/kindle?

I don't think you can put library books on a kindle. Its limited to books in its software.
I don't know if the Nook has the same limitation.

Re: Let's talk Kindle or similar devices! UPDATED WITH NEW Q
I don't have any yet, but I'm leaning towards a Nook. The downside is a lot of the books I want to read are not available in hard copy form in the library, so I'd have to purchase them, which I wanted to avoid, and Nook ebooks are more expensive than Kindle ebooks typically. I'm still debating, because my "to read" list is literally hundreds long, and I could see this becoming a very expensive hobby. The upside though is still a little cheaper than paperback or hard cover (usually), and saves the space in the house, obviously.

The kindle has its own wifi called whispernet - you do not need your own wifi. I believe it is international now, I have the first generation so its just in the US.

NEW Q:

No idea about the Kindle, but with the nook, no, it uses 3G.

OK.... talk to me about the system requirements.
What do you need to make this work?
I am leaning towards the Nook. My library supports the Nook, not the Kindle.
In short.... we have Fios. Would it work with that? Do I need to buy a wireless thingy.
If I were to use it outside (train, beach, etc... I would need to be near a wifi zone?).
I am so technically NOT inclined!

You can download books from you library onto a Nook, Kindle is not compatible. In your house, the nook will use your wifi if you have it or it will connect to the 3G network kinda like a cell phone. Same when you are outside. If you are near a wifi hotspot it will connect to that, or the 3G network.
