I am a northeast girl through and through so I'd like to stay up here, I can't see myself heading south again ever. I love having four seasons although I could live in fall year round. lol

I've always been obsessed with log cabins so my dream is find a nice piece of wooded land somewhere up in the New England area and build a beautiful, custom log home. Ideally, I'd like to do this in the next 5-6 years so that we could use it as a vacation home and then later retire there.

What is your dream retirement? Chat Icon

Pennslyvania/NJ/W Virginia sort of area. Roughly 50 acres. Mostly wooded, with a water feature. River, pond, lake, etc. I'd love to camp in my "backyard" and still be in the middle of nowhere. I'd probably find some Scout troops in the area and offer my property for them to camp on.

Probably here. I'm one of the few people on this board who loves New York. It helps that we have a second home on the beach. That is where I will probably retire full time to. But if we are going with a dream I'd choose Hawaii - loved it there.

That sounds PERFECT! Exactly what I would love too! I would love to have a small river on the property, the sound of running water is so peaceful. Chat Icon

DH and I plan on snowbirding between here and the Big Island of Hawaii. We are actually heading there next month to look at properties.

Right now, Colorado. I really like Evergreen but it will depend on what type of property I can afford. I want enough land to have horses, goats and chickens. I want access to water and I want a mountain view. Most likely I will follow my grandchildren, if I have any.
I love Long Island but it's too crowded and expensive. I live in a great area but it's getting so built up. Traffic is terrible at all times of the day and it's getting dirty.

Not sure, DH is dying to go to S. Carolina, but I have no idea where, or even if I would like it.
I just want to be comfortable, and near the ocean or a lake.

LI will always be home but there is something to be said for moving away. There are so many gorgeous places to live out there and that don't have the congestion and chaos of NY. The last thing I would want to deal with in retirement is traffic and crowds.

I've heard Colorado is absolutely gorgeous. Talk about nature and scenery!Chat Icon

It all depends on where my son goes. I tell him all the time I will follow where ever you go. I just always tell him to pick someplace warmer. I am done with winters!! I couldn't imagine not being in the same state as him just as how now I cannot imagine being in a different state from my own mom (never will happen).

I doubt we'd follow DC, especially if they went in different directions, but I fully expect them to want to stay with us... Chat Icon Chat Icon I plan on having a house for each of them on my 50 acres, if they want.... Chat Icon

My kids would still say 50 acres away is too close lol, and you know what, I would be happy they did. Not that I don’t want to see them but they need to live the life they want to in the future.

I live in Upstate NY. My DH and I would like to move somewhere slightly more temperate - like southern PA, DE, or MD. So we would still be close to our family, but less snow. With that said, we will see where our DS lands and make a decision based on that.

I just said it on the other thread but ideally once my kids are out of the house (even before retirement since my husband and I can work from anywhere) I would like to spend winters out west in the Rocky Mountain area, Spring down south (either Charleston or Florida), Summer in Martha's Vineyard and Fall on Long Island. I'd also like to travel a lot. At some point I think we will do an around the world trip.

Check out Daniel Island and Mount Pleasant. Both very close to Charleston but also close to the beach and great places to raise a family.

Re: Let's talk retirement dreams. :o) Where is your ideal place to retire and why?

I said some of this on the other thread but I would also like to be near DS and I hope we can afford a place in both a warm and cold climate because I hate the extremes.

But if I'm fantasizing, I can see a summer house in Colorado and a winter property in Arizona or Southern Cali.

almost the same for me.

i'm not anti-winters, but DS is.
other than that, this is me.

i hope he picks a state i've never lived in, i'm ready for something completely new.

Somewhere with a zero chance of snow and definitely an HOA so I don’t have to do anything. And tons of amenities. I want to live like I’m on a permanent vacation!

Same. Resort living.
And I don't want to ever see a flake of snow again.

Yes yes yes. I am so done with home ownership to the point is taking care of inside and out. I will probably want to own but not do outside stuff and feel like I am on vacation.
