Let's talk Willow Palin and her homophobic comments on Facebook (I have included the conversation)
**SCROLL DOWN BELOW FOR ACTUAL FACEBOOK POSTS***
Do you think this is an indicator of the Palin's conservative views on social issues? Or, do you think this is "typical teen speak"? Is this shocking to you? Do you think this will hurt Palin?
-------------------------------------------------- Willow Palin, the 16-year-old daughter of former Alaska governor Sarah Palin, wrote multiple Facebook posts containing homophobic slurs such as "faggot" on Sunday night, according to TMZ.
The web site reports that Palin's teenage daughter wrote the comments on Sunday night, when her mother's television show "Sarah Palin's Alaska" premiered on TLC. According to TMZ, a classmate of one of Palin's children published a Facebook update claiming that the show "is failing so hard right now."
Willow Palin reportedly unloaded on the student, calling him "so gay" and "such a faggot." She later demanded that the student "quit talkin **** about my family." According to screenshots obtained by TMZ, the 16-year-old called another commenter on the Facebook thread a "low life loser" and lashed out at multiple others, writing, "Sorry that all you guys are jealous of my families success and you guys aren't goin to go anywhere with your lives."

It's definitely typical teen talk. Disgusting, but true. I teach 7th and 8th grade and they throw "gay" and "retarded" around so loosely. I'm always having a conversation about how dropping your books on the floor doesn't make you retarded and that it's an insult to people who actually are retarded or telling the kids that real gay people don't do the stupid things they do when the call each other that as an insult. It makes me mad, but honestly I think it has ZERO to do with Sarah Palin as the parent.

She's 16, so I can't say I'm too bothered. But I am sort of surprised that 1) Bristol got into the fray the ways she did- she's not a kid IMO and she's a mom- would have liked to see more dignity from her and 2) the Palin kids haven't gotten (or haven't heeded) the "stuff on the internet is FOREVER and Facebook is NOT private no matter what you think" lecture from Sarah and Todd.

Re: Let's talk Willow Palin and her homophobic comments on Facebook (I have included the conversation)
Honestly I couldn't even read it all...
but I 100% think that's typical teen BS.
It also seems as though some of these people are people that know the family and there's more to the story even. Seems a little to me like the palin girls are being picked on too.
I'm not one to stick up for Palin at all. But this is def not something I would crucify those girls for. The other kids said some really nasty things as well.
ETA: Esp after reading it in context.. I don't think it was homophobic at all..and I think the media is blowing it out of proportion. They made it sound like a totally different story... now reading some of the play by play I have a different opinion of it.

Re: Let's talk Willow Palin and her homophobic comments on Facebook (I have included the conversation)
I am not saying what she said is right but they are teenagers and at that age they think it is "cool" to speak like that. DH's little cousin who is 15 says fagot and gay all the time even tho he knows it is bad. they just think it is funny. I don't think this has anything to do with the Palin's being bad parents or them being republican, I think it has to do with them being teenagers plain and simple

Ok, so I agree with all you, but then I got to thinking: would mine (and your) opinion change if the boy was actually indeed gay?
and then my answer changed. What do you think?

honestly, in this case no. but because they were bantering the girls too... it was back and forth. to me it's like... if you can dish it, you should be able to take it. People in glass houses, shouldn't throw stones. There were a lot of nasty things being said on both sides. I wouldn't dictate which part of a petty teen fight was out of line... when it started out of line from the get go.
I have no issues with gay's whatsoever... I actually find them to be fun. And have a few gay friends. In this case I didn't find it to be such a terrible insult to be called gay, not after all the other crap that was said.

Re: Let's talk Willow Palin and her homophobic comments on Facebook (I have included the conversation)
I'm not bashing Sarah and lord knows, I'm not a fan, but I think it says something about parenting when kids feel free to use those terms. I guess b/c I have a close relative who is gay that I think my mom would KILL me if I used that term, no matter how lightly.
So while I think part of it's teens being teens, I also think that it DOES say something about parenting. With all of the bullying lately, that would be a super important talk to have. Terms like that are, imo, NOT to be taken lightly nor to be thrown around so freely.
But then again, I also hate when people use the expression, "That's so retarded." My mom would quickly teach me a lesson in senitivity if I dared utter those words either.
And finally, it's no excuse. Teens being teens or teen talk. It still doesn't make it okay. Maybe I'm old fashioned.

And DON'T get me started on Bristol's involvement. While I think her dancing stinks of DWTS, I was liking her as a person. THAT opinion changed!

Typical kid crap. And Bristol is pretty much a kid herself, just because she had a baby doesnt mean she grew up. You can pretty much open any convo on facebook and see pretty much the same thing going on (well ok maybe not bashing your dancing on a national TV show or your familys show about your state but you get the picture)

I absolutely do not think that it is right. However, I think in this case it just "teen talk." I have gay friends who use those terms.

Re: Let's talk Willow Palin and her homophobic comments on Facebook (I have included the conversation)
Unfortunatly for our society this is all too normal---I don't think parents can totally stop this unless they put their children in a bubble. It is very sad.
But does anyone else feel that this may not be real? I would not go as far to say these kids did not have real face book pages , but do you really think they would have it under their real name?
ETA: nevermind....... on Bristol's "Official" facebook page she apologizes.

Re: Let's talk Willow Palin and her homophobic comments on Facebook (I have included the conversation)
I think it was stupid to respond & she was certainly being goaded to defend her family, but I don't see why it should be news. If she were say a judge, an elected official, a teacher, a Presidential nominee, I get it being news. A former Presidential nominee's underage daughter? Nope, not newsworthy.
I think many people (teens & adults alike) don't get the idea that the when you type something out & hit send/post/reply, it's out there.
As for her free use of slurs, it is teenspeak. While I'd love to blame the parents over it, I know plenty of parents who would never utter the words that kids use among their friends & would be horrified by them.
