Leyland Cypress.. Help!
I put my DH in charge of finding a landscaper to plant privacy bushes in our yard - my first mistake
Anyhow the guy said that Leyland Cypress would be our best option and said we needed about 10 for the space we wanted to plant them in. Fine. My DH talks all details with him. The landscaper calls a few nurseries and gets back to us. We agree with the price. $1,000 which includes the trees and the service to plant them. They are coming on Monday to do it.
I was talking to DH about it this morning and I mentioned the size of the trees, which I completely forgot to ask and didnt really care because I had put him in charge. He told me they are 2ft trees.
We are getting ripped off aren't we? I had him call back and ask the breakdown of the price and the landscaper told him it is $750 for 10 trees and the soil. $250 for the labor. Mulch bedding is not included. My issue is with the price of the trees. For $750 I estimate that the tree costs $55 and the soil $20 EACH. I am looking online and finding much larger trees for $55.
I guess my question is for anyone that has planted these themselves or has had them planted.. what did you pay? What is a reasonable price? Is it too hard to just do it ourselves? Any input would be appreciated. I really think the guy is lying about the price and I would love to see a copy of the receipt for the bushes he ordered for us.

Leyland Cypress.. Help!
We paid about $20 for Leyland Cypresses, but that was back in the spring, not sure if they were on sale.
We bought them from Stables in Center Moriches and planted them ourselves. The guys at the nursery gave my DH instructions, they were a wealth of knowledge! Highly recommend this place.
It's not hard to plant yourself, but it is work! Lots of work! DH and I like gardening, though. This project was a fun, tiring weekend.
Well worth it though, our Leylands have grown sooo much and look great.
Good luck!!

I should mention I no longer live on Long Island and I don't really know any "good" nurseries here.
We also don't do well with gardening.. haha neither of has have a green thumb. I don't mind paying someone to do that for me I suppose (even though I am trying to convince DH to just suck it up and do it)

Re: Leyland Cypress.. Help!
I just went to lowes and they had 3 gallon trees for $15.. so now I am fuming.
My DH refuses to call and cancel - he said its too late at this point but I refuse to spend THAT much more.
Has anyone ever purchased from Lowes or Home Depot? Are they good plants or do they die easily? I am trying to figure out why our quote is so much for such small trees

Leyland Cypress.. Help!
Why don't you call the landscaper if your DH won't.
Who is getting the trees to your home? The landscaper? the nursery? What about the soil? IF the landscaper is providing delivery of the items, that needs to be factored into the cost you pay.
It's a touchy subject around my house. I hated paying for landscaping but my front yard is over planted and requires a lot of maintenance. We just paid $750 to trim shrubs and remove a line of privets. This included haul away and new seed.
Landscaping is a lot of work.

I just called - didnt have his number before
Anyhow, he basically said we can get the plants from anywhere, its not too late (as my DH swore haha). I think we are going to buy them cheaper elsewhere (i am looking around now) and just have him do the work (which is $250).. this should save us a ton of money. The trees he was going to provide were so much more because they are from some farm... yadda yadda.. I dunno. I don't think its worth the extra money being that they are only guaranteed for a year. I could buy and replace the ones from lowes 4 times in a year for the same price.
The main point is crisis averted and if I didn't interfere we would have paid double... I shouldnt give DH tasks anymore (i kid, sorta).
Thanks for the help!

Re: Leyland Cypress.. Help!
You're getting totally ripped off - We bought them in Home Depot for $20 each and planted them ourselves .........We are far for having green thumbs - they grow like crazy and in 2 years are already above the 6 foot fence.
(they were 2 feet also when we started)
