Re: Lice question

Is this going around? On Sunday I saw my daughter had lice, bought the shampoo and treated it. Have been combing and removing every day. Found 4 lice yesterday and removed nits. Today found 1 live and 2 nits. Her head seems clean right now but I'll be continuing this process everyday probably till Sunday. I purchased the fairy tale lice prevention spray and it gets here tomorrow. I'll be spraying on her every day now and keeping her hair in braids and not loose. I keep washing bedding everyday.
She started K in September and I am pretty sure she got it from someone at school. No one in our family has it. Nurse insists it's not from school. Monday no notice came home about lice. I'm pretty pissed they didn't send letters home to all the parents in the class. I do not want my removal attempts to get hindered by her getting it again if there are other infested kids. I'm thinking to have a chat with the teacher by Friday.
Shouldn't a letter be sent home??
It's always going around, and yes, absolutely a letter should be sent home! I would call the Principal. You are missing nits that are hatching if you are having to repeat the process everyday and finding new live bugs. Which shampoo did you get? I would get the Lice Free spray and saturate the scalp and leave on overnight. It's non toxic. It SAYS it kills nits, but I don't believe that. But I would get that over anything else. I know my friend's "nitpicker" recommends that one. I used it on my daughter the night before taking her to Deliceful.
I used Nix.
I'll be calling to ask what their policy is on lice and speak to the principal about the situation. Thanks for the input ladies. Hoping this nightmare ends soon.

Boys don't normally get this right?
I'm sorry all of you are dealing with this! It sounds horrible :(
Lice doesn't discriminate (although African Americans are a lot less likely to get lice)! My son got it and gave it to our entire family. His hair was not super long at the time although it wasn't a buzz cut. If you are not shaved completely bald you can get lice.
Also, the woman at the lice treatment place told me braids are just a ladder for lice to climb. The best way to wear your hair is in a tight bun.

Re: Lice question
My DD are 10 and 8 and we have dealt with lice 3 times over the years...Combing and removal are the key. If it happens again I am not nearly as panicked as I was the first time.
The key is to buy a good metal lice comb, the cheap plastic ones in the kits are not good enough. We also use NIX shampoo and I found it to be reliable. It takes a ton of time to follow through but we will also wash/dry everyone's sheets, blankets and jackets in hot everyday for 3-4 days. Throw away all brushes and hair bands, pack up stuffed animals and put in the garage for 2 weeks. I also vacuum and spray the car, couches, rugs and clean all surfaces. If you take the time you can get rid of them in 1-2 days......

Re: Lice question
Question- why does the water have to be hot and a hot dryer? Won't just being in the water of the washing machine drown them? Do they not drown?
I heard this with bed bugs too and thought the same thing- don't these suckers drown?

it's the heat that kills them, otherwise they would die off when you showered

Ugh, we did a lot of braids and didn't even think of that! My daughter's hair is in a bun this week and heavily sprayed with the mint Deliceful spray!
As a side note about Nix, Rid, etc. These are TOXIC chemicals you are putting on your children's heads. Your skin is your largest organ. I'm not a granola roller by any means, but I definitely wouldn't take my kid to a farm and let the farmer spray her down with pesticides! So I would avoid those. I'm telling you, Lice Freee is the way to go. It's sodium and it suffocates them and kills them. It's about $20 at Walgreens (haven't seen it anywhere else), smells like black licorice, and works without the harsh pesticides.
Also wanted to add that some people just don't itch when they have lice. The woman said a girl was so infested, had dozens of live bugs, and they didn't make her itch at all! The key is to just check their heads every few days! I think October is a HUGE month for lice because school started last month, and people were in close quarters all Summer with cousins, friends at sleepovers, vacations, etc. Then they don't know they have lice, come back to school, and BAM, infested by the time October rolls around and it's noticed.

Lice question
Hello all, I know little about lice so pardon if some of these questions seem obvious
BargainMama >> They put a natural lice killer in their hair (my daughter had no live bugs though)
So your daughter had 5 nits but no live bugs? I thought lice lived on the hair so if they hatched from an egg, wouldn't they be hanging out in the hair? why wouldn't there be live bugs? (where would they have gone?)
jodi714 >>She didn't complain of itching until that trip and I wasn't itchy at all!!
A person can have lice/get bitten and not itch? wow, that would make it very tough to even know that there is an issue.
How does it normally spread? I assume they like to hang around the hair. Do kids just rub heads against each other in school? or share hats?
Weird one but...the general consensus is that lice can only live for about 2 days without feeding. So if someone had a case, would this work: get head treated (by professional who picks out the lice and nits) then don't go home for 3 days (should starve by then) That should solve the issue then, right?

Sorry, I thought I wrote that part! The Licefree killed the one bug, and when I was combing with the nit terminator type comb looking for stuff, I guess it got stuck up in the metal void space in the comb. I was tapping the comb on the counter the following morning before going to Deliceful (after having it in a bag in the freezer all night), and a bug came out (dead......gag lol). When we went to Deliceful, there were no others, so that was her only one. One bug can lay up to like 15 eggs a day, that is why we are thinking she caught it THAT day. The eggs take like a week or so to hatch from what I gather. Then you get more bugs, who lay more eggs, that hatch, and so on!
Hugging, sitting shoulder to shoulder with heads near each other can do it. They don't jump or fly. They crawl. I make my daughter put her coat IN her backpack from now on, because I'm sure they crawl from coat to coat in the coat closet at school looking for a head (ick). Also, sharing headphones at school (mine didn't and knows better about that one)
Theoretically you could leave your house for 3 days, but I wouldn't risk it. What if there was a "super lice" bug that lived LOL

Same here!
I had no clue these suckers were so diligent. Ive never had them and now with my son in Pre-K, I'm a nervous wreck about them. We have already been notified once this year of a case in his school.

Re: Lice question
This is seriously terrifying.. I didn't realize it was something that happened so often. Someone said the nurse missed people with them, so are they hard to see? I've never dealt with this yet, but with 2 in elementary, I'm thinking I should be more diligent with checking. What am I looking for?
Also the Lice free spray is that only if you have them? Is there something for preventing them? For a boy and a girl?
Sorry to hijack! And sorry to everyone dealing with this, it doesn't sound like an easy fix!

Fairytales is a spray you can put on to prevent.
I checked my DD's head, saw NOTHING. Then used the comb right after that, and bam, out came nits. So in our case, they were hard to see because the nits (eggs) were SO tiny, probably because it was so new. Get the lice terminator comb. My DD absolutely hates the comb, but I told her it's a necessity now!
