Life is like a game of chutes and ladders
Just when you feel like you've taken two steps forward in the right direction, you fall 10 steps back down the ladder.
My dad is a mess. He has been having a hard time adjusting to his new apartment, and to living in the city. He just left for 4 months to stay in Florday, but the problem is that he hasn't driven his car since the surgery because he lives in the city, and his coordination and vision just isn't the same.
He arrived in Florida yesterday and he got into an accident within 5 minutes of driving - I almost knew this would happen, and I feel so irresponsible for not preventing it. Thankfully he just drove into a divider and didn't hurt himself or anyone else, but he called me, and I could hear him holding back the tears, telling me his life is a disaster and he doesn't know what to do. The saddest part of all, he has been in such a depression that he has no one else to talk to, just me.
I told him he needs to take taxis everywhere he goes, and it's ok when he goes back home because he lives in the center of the city so he doesn't need a car. But, to him, it's the complete and total end of his youth and independence.
And then he started rambling, telling me that, at his last doctor visit, his doctor laid it all out on the table for him -he cannot go back on the transplant list, and that means that, under the best of conditions, the life expectancy is 78 while on dialysis, but because of his heart condition, it's considerably less for him, so they only give him 2-3 years. I just didn't know what to say in response. I'm so devastated for him I told him I want him to see a therapist when he comes back home, and he said ok.
I just don't know what else to do

Beth, I am so sorry. I know it must be heartbreaking to hear this from him but the fact that he has you to be there for him and support him and help him through these times, is incredible. Like Shelly said, that is all you can do...and continue to do for him.

I am sorry Beth. It is so hard and heartbreaking to have to take care of a parent that is going through a tough time.
I wish there was something we could do to make it easier on you - You are such a loving caring person who gives so much of yourself to everyone around you, especially those in need. Your father is so lucky to have you and I am sure you will make things easier for him.

Beth, I just don't know what to say. This must truly be heartbreaking. I so admire how you treat your dad. Your setting a wonderful example for your daughter. I really believe that children learn how to treat us, by the way we treat our parents.

I am so sorry that you have to go through this....Try to spend as much time as you can with him.....It is sooo important. I wish I could change how I much I spent with my parents after Danielle and I got married.....and now that they are gone....It makes me so sad.
You have time with your dad though, so you are lucky. I am sure it is very hard for him, and I know what he is going through because my dad went through the same things.....
