Oh my gosh- I dont know what to say.  I feel like I want to cry for your dad. This broke my heart to hear this. I am terribly sorry your dad is going through this. Please dont feel responsible. I am praying for him

i am so sorry to hear all that. i wish i knew what to say to make you both feel better. i just hope you know what a godsend you have been to your father, because you KNOW he would not have made it this far without you.
i agree with you about the counseling - i think someone objective to talk to is just what he needs, especially if he feels that his life is a "disaster."
i hope he is in better spirits soon!

All you can do is listen and provide support, like you have been doing all along. I think a therapist and possibly a support group of older gentlemen going through the same stuff would be helpful too.
I am so sorry. Its awful watching our parents get older.

I am sorry to hear this.
You are right - it is kind of like chutes and ladders... but eventually you do get to the top. You are strong and lovely and a wonderful daughter. And my prayers are with your whole family.

You are right. We as parents spend our time giving our children the tools to become more independent and watching them grow, only to see the opposite happening with our parents. They go from being the strong independent people who gave us the tools to becoming less and less independent and more and more dependent on us as they age.
It's definitely hard on both. The circle of life is beautiful when you get to watch it from the end of our children but it can be cruel when you watch it from the perspective of our parents.
You have been such a dutiful daughter. I know the news he told you was probably shocking and sad please enjoy your time with him.
