Likely Miscarriage - Need Advice

I went in for an ultrasound today and there is no heartbeat. The baby should be 9 weeks but is only measuring 6 weeks... I have charted so am almost positive of the due date.

The doctor took some blood to confirm the miscarriage but results may not come for another day or two.

For those who went through this, could you please tell me help me answer a few questions?

1. When should I expect to experience the cramps and heavy bleeding that results from a miscarriage? I haven't experienced this yet...

2. If you're still in your first trimester when it happened, did you just wait, or did you go in for the D&C?

3. When are you able to try again?

Thanks, and sorry if this brings up bad memories...

First I am so sorry you have to go through this Chat Icon

I have had 3 miscarriages, which all occurred in the first trimester. I had a d&c for all three. I never bled or had cramping. I believe the doctors like you to wait 2 cycles, but I know every situation is different. Again, I am so sorry and if you have any questions or need to talk you are more then welcome to fm me.

Re: Likely Miscarriage - Need Advice

I’m so sorry!!
I had a mc in March- I was in the 1st trimester, but I was spotting pink and cramping which prompted me to go to the hospital, where they found no heartbeat.
I went to the ER on a Wednesday and that Friday had the miscarriage. I have to say, as someone who went through it naturally, I would advise you to opt for a D&C. When you miscarry naturally, you literally don’t know when it’s going to happen.
We were told to wait 3 cycles and then we tried again.

Re: Likely Miscarriage - Need Advice

Once I started brown spotting it took 2 weeks before I started miscarrying naturally. I did not want to get the D&C. The wait was a bit difficult.

Re: Likely Miscarriage - Need Advice

I'm so sorry!

I started bleeding slightly around 8-9 weeks and the sono showed that the baby stopped growing at 6w. I did a D+C, because it had already been a few weeks and I never had the cramping/ heavy bleeding.

We started trying immediately and got pregnant right away.

If u have any questions about a D+C, please FM me!

So so sorry for your loss Chat Icon

I didn't really cramp until after the D&C, but I was bleeding heavily (8 weeks) which is how I knew to go to call my dr and go to the hospital. I just had a bad back ache.

As for trying again, all drs are different. My dr wanted us to wait 3 cycles to try again, so that's what we did.

Hang in there. It does get better.... Chat Icon

Re: Likely Miscarriage - Need Advice

Thanks ladies, looks like I can't avoid the cramp and heavy bleeding even with a D&C...

I guess I'll just have to wait it out. The prospect of a D&C sounds scary!

Though the wait also means I'll have to wait longer to try again...

I mc'd at 8ish weeks naturally. It was like a bad period for three days. I didn't need a D&C. Your Dr. will determine whether or not a D&C is required. They usually suggest you wait a cycle or two to try again. That being said, I got preggars right after my mc. Chat Icon

Re: Likely Miscarriage - Need Advice

I am SO sorry!!!
I had a m/c in Sept. Went in at 8 weeks and it was size of 6 weeks and no heartbeat. We waited 2 weeks - went back and there was no change. I had a D&C a few days later.
I had heard horror stories on LIF from people miscarrying on their own and the cramps and how long it took to pass...so there was no question to me - I opted for the D&C. For me that was the best choice. Once I knew I had miscarried I just wanted it to be over with. I had mild cramping after and only bled a little bit for a week. The D&C was the easiest part of the entire experience for me.
So sorry!!!

I'm so sorry for your loss Chat Icon

I was told I had a missed mc last May...had a scheduled D&C but naturally mc'd over night. That was the worst part for me. The cramping was intense and lasted for hours. There were a few moments where I was ready to ask to be taken to the ER.

Afterwards, I still needed a D&C since my body did not pass all of the tissue. The D&C was the easiest part of the whole thing, physically. Very mild bleeding and cramping afterwards.

I have had a few losses... For my first, it was in the 2nd trimester in the 17th wk so that was a completely different story... For my losses in the first tri, I had a d&c for triplets in the 7th week. This last loss, I was in the 7th week as well with a single baby and my doctor is trying to avoid a d&c at all costs. We are following my beta every week to watch it go down. I have had minimal bleeding over the past month or so and my beta has dropped so far by about 2000 pts in that time. I was afraid of it being very traumatic but so far its been fine (physically). Of course everyone is different.

I know this isn't easy and I am so sorry you are going through this Chat Icon
