You did the right thing, only a real assshole would make a crying kid wait.
this!
I agree, especially since I have been the one with the 6 yo that really had to pee. I have never "cut the line" but was grateful to the person who let us go ahead of them

Re: Line cutting etiquette
What a jerk I would have let the girl go and told "princess" to take my place so she wouldn't pee in her pants.

For a child or an elderly person absolutely... for someone cutting because they have a friend in front of me... i dont think so
This exactly. I don't buy into that whole "Well, my friend was saving the spot for the two of us." especially for a bathroom. Are you going in together? No? Then back of the line!
But for that kid- of COURSE I'd let them go first. People are ridiculous.
For the bathroom absolutely but I'm not going to pretend. I go to a supermarket near a retirement community. It's like Night of the Living Dead with Shopping Carts. Those little old ladies can play up the "I just have 30 items & I'm in a rush" or "I'm only getting a few cold cuts but will ask for them at different types of slices, challenge the deli guy over his definition of thinly sliced & ask to taste different things until I've had my buffet lunch" thing way too often. So I'm not always willing to let them go first.
Of course... i thought the question was for the bathroom though.
Oh yeah! Same here. There's no "emergency" supermarket trip as far as I'm concerned. If it were that serious of an emergency, you'd drop your items and run out of the store. I don't even let people cut me getting onto the train! But I do always give up my seat for an elderly/pregnant person or a child anyway.

Re: Line cutting etiquette
As a mom of a 5 year old- I have had lots of people let us cut- and to my knowledge no one has ever said anything. In fact, we were on line last week at Chelsea Market and the person in front of us let us go, then the person in front of them. It was very nice and touching. It also teaches my daughter a good lesson- and I would expect her to do the same as she gets older.
With that being said, I also always let people with kids/elderly go in front of me. Its just good manners. And it never occurred to me to ask anyone else and I would hope we all have compassion for others.

In this situation you were right. It's a child! Give me a freaking break.
I would have done the same thing if it was a child, a PG woman or an elderly woman. Some situations are more more "urgent" than others.

Re: Line cutting etiquette
when i was pregnant, people would see me standing there and automatically ask me if id like to go ahead of them. it was always so sweet and really helped me out. if youve ever been pregnant you know what i mean.

Lol- yeah when I came out of the bathroom, I said to the mean girl who wouldn't let the little one cut, "It's all yours, princess."
Good for you! What a jerk.
