Re: LIRR suspended.. any updates?
This is from Newsday
LIRR: Fire caused signal problem, suspending service
All Long Island Rail Road service except for the Port Washington line remains suspended Monday afternoon due to a fire in the switching tower near the Jamaica station, according to the agency.
The fire broke out around 10:45 a.m. and caused the signal malfunctions, according to LIRR spokesman Rich Mendelson. He said the fire has been extinguished and it was unclear when the signal problems would be resolved. The fire and the signal malfunctions were not weather-related, Mendelson said.
The New York City fire department were at the scene, as well as investigators from the MTA police department and LIRR, Mendelson said.
Passengers with tickets for travel between Queens, Brooklyn and Penn Station will have their fares honored on the New York City Transit system, Mendelson said. "No word on buses" yet for LIRR passengers, he said.
The service shutdown stunned dozens of off-peak passengers at the Ronkonkoma station, where the 11:10 train never left the station.
While trains had been suspended here for the Manhattan-bound trains, Ronkonkoma station attendants recently said a single train would make local stops to Hicksville. Dozens of passengers boarded the train, hoping service would be restarted by the time they hit Hicksville.
Mendelson said he could not confirm if a train would travel between Ronkonkoma and Hicksville, and said that passengers would not be able to take a train beyond Hicksville.
Rose Defalco of Ronkonkoma, who was at the station with a niece and nephew from Italy, were stranded inside, looking for answers. Few were forthcoming from the brief PA announcement. The relatives "really want to go," to the city, she said.
Customers were lined up out the door at the station, where two attendants processed ticket returns. The big question for most, with the shutdown apparently indefinite, was how to get west. There are no alternatives - other than driving themselves - which most here said they were unprepared to do.
"I'm stranded on Long Island," Manhattan lawyer James Kimmel said into his cell phone as he paced the station.
Kimmel said a dispatcher at a local cab stand was more helpful with travel advice than LIRR reps. "They said, 'There's no service ... I don't know anything more,' " Kimmel said of rail workers. The cab dispatcher told him a Hampton Jitney leaves from a stop nearby at the Long Island Expressway. Kimmel was considering it. "I'll give it another hour," he said.
Good luck to anyone who has to take the LIRR today!

I don't know where you live, but you can take the subway to jamaica to take a nassau bus.

Re: LIRR suspended.. any updates?
Here is the Nassau bus map. I know you can catch buses by the end of the F train (179th street in jamaica). These buses take you to the hempstead hub so you can continue from there.

Yup, pretty much!! I'm still that everything is sorted out before rush hour. What are the chances of that happening???

Re: LIRR suspended.. any updates?
If anyone is really trapped & needs to get home desperately...Hampton Jitney
They make a stop in Islip & Queens, if you can have someone pick you up. They take credit cards on the bus. http://www.hamptonjitney.com/cgi-bin/stops.cgi?route=Hamptons%2FNYC&dir=E&loc=all
It's $26.
Also I believe Port Washington is running

This is my plan as well. My boss lives in Port Washington..its either that or I'm gonna rally up all the people in the office that live around me and share a car service home.
