LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
I HATE stupid, nasty, inconsiderate, a$$hole people.
Today, the train was packed like sardines. I got a seat because I get in at Hicksville. There was a delay on the line for signal problems (like 20+ min).
So we FINALLY pull into Jamaica. I see a woman get on the train and kinda walk up the aisle slowly. I look up and see that she is pregnant. I take a moment to see if anyone gives up their seat for her. EVERYONE buries their head and ignores her. I *see* this happeneing.
I look at her as she passed me and asks if she would like to sit. She was SO thankful and SO appreciative. I said , LOUDLY "I couldnt let you stand, and I'm amazed no one else offered their seat".
People buried their heads even more.
When I get on the subway, tarin, bus etc. I *always* look to see if theere is someone old, pregs, with a cane. I will ALWAYS give up my seat.
ETA: To change headline. it looked like I was d0uche :)

That was very nice of you and I agree, people can really suck so hard.
When I was preggo it was practically the highlight of my day when someone would give up a seat like that.
I always give up my seat for anyone who looks like they need it more than me!

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
Good for you! I do the same thing, especially after being pregnant and witnessing how everyone avoided me when I got on the subway. Most of the time when offered I didn't even take the seat but good grief at least offer!! Human decency people!
On another note. This morning on the subway a little girl was in her stroller and her dad was standing behind her. I was reading my book and noticed she dropped her Pooh book on the floor. I looked up and I swear the dad was just looking at it lying on the floor! I waited a second because I wanted to be sure he wasn't going to give it back to his little girl, but nope...he just stared at it!! I picked it and and said..."Here you go sweety" and kinda looked at him like...HELLO...ANYONE HOME?!

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
I remember being at an Olive Garden when I was pg a few years ago. There was a wait, so everyone was huddled in the lobby area. I am not usually one to make a deal about sitting, but my feet really did hurt and I could have used the seat. As soon as a family got called to their table, there was a MAD rush to take their seats. I was not as quick as the rest but did attempt to sit. They looked at me and were like "oh, did you want to sit?"
COURTESY people, COURTESY!

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
Since Ive been pregnant Ive come to believe that people have been raised in zoos. Im sorry, but I firmly believe that If you see a pregnant woman or a elderly person for that matter, offer them your f*&$ seat! Its common decency- I always do, not sure why manners seem to have gone out the window. Im 9 months pregnant and some young guy actually stepped in front of me to get a seat on the subway the other day! I was so taken aback I just stared at him and then a woman, not the 10 men sitting around her, was nice enough to offer me her seat.

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
I ALWAYS offer my seat on the subway or the LIRR for a pregnant woman. I have never been nor will be pregnant but I can just imagine how uncomfortable it must be to stand for a ong period of time.
I find that the biggest offenders are men...but then again they have no clue anyway!

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
Being 9 months pregnant right now.. i totally agree with you
The daily commuters on the LIRR are waaaay worse than most people who ride the subway.
A few weeks ago when we had major delays on the LIRR (i forget which reason this was, they're so frequently lately), i was on a packed train out of Penn since so many trains were cancelled. My DH and stood in the vestibule of the train for the entire 45 minute ride home. The only person who 'offered' me a seat was a woman who told me of a seat available on one of the pull down benches on the other side of the wall. since it was so hot on the train and those seats are tiny anyway, i knew i'd get overheated sitting smooshed against the wall so i said no, thanks anyway for pointing it out - just as a guy pushed past me and took the seat DH was furious but i told him to let it go since i'd rather stand with him and get cooled down than sit down squeezed between hot sweaty businessmen who don't know how to close their legs.
Im only on the subway for about 10 minutes, so if i don't get a seat, i don't usually mind that much - and its about a 50/50 chance if someone actually gets up to offer me one.
i find that the majority of LIRR commuters have the mentality of 'i've worked hard all day, all i want is a seat - pregnant ladies be damned' which to me is much worse than the subway riders because on the LIRR, you know you have at least a 30-40 minute or way longer ride - so you're forcing a pregnant woman to stand for a lot longer. At least on the subways, people are always getting up at the next stop so there are more opportunities to get a seat.
and its 50/50 on who offers seats too - men do it just as much as woman (at least from my unofficial survey results!)

Good for you! I always try to give a pregnant woman a seat. When I was pregnant I rode the subway every day up until my ninth month and was NEVER offered a seat.

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
I can't stand to see this. I've gotten into so many arguements with people on the train about things like this. A few years ago I was standing on the subway and the train was packed. Someone got off at the stop and left an open seat. I tapped the pregnant woman and let her know there was a seat available. She thanked me and moved toward it. This guy came out of nowhere and knocked us BOTH out of the way to get to the seat. I gave him hell for it. He got up and gave her the seat.

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
On behalf of pregnant ladies, thank you.
And for people who have never been there, I just want to explain. It's not just that when you're pregnant, your feet get swollen and hurt. And that your back gets sore. And that you are exhausted at the end of the day and it's hard to stand for long periods of time. When you're pregnant, your whole center of gravity changes. It's really hard to balance. I was on the subway once, 8 months pregnant, standing because no one would give me a seat. The train took a turn pretty fast and I literally toppled over. Luckily, DH was next to me and I slammed right into him and he was able to catch me so I didn't hit the ground. But it was so scary. And I grew up in NYC; it's not like I don't know how to stand on a train.
Oh, and in my experience, whenever I'm offered a seat on the train now (which does happen most of the time), 80% of the time it's a woman who offers it.

Re: LIRR Vent- Pregnant women Ignored!
That was very nice of you!!! Glad you made the others feels like idiots (hopefully).
I remember being 8 months pregnant and huge, and having to stand on a very crowded LIRR train the entire ride. I was miserable. I could barely hold on to something it was so crowded. No one offered a seat.
