Local Town Library vs How Good is the Area

would you say there is any way this is sort of, kind of connected? a better, more updated, better looking, better stocked library means a better (more desirable) area?

A lot of the time, yes. However in my area, the libraries are just average for Long Island while the schools are top rated and they make the area very desirable.

I don't think it is directly related. I can think of a very middle of the road town that has an amazing library.

Interesting idea. I grew up in Levittown, and I know a lot of people (not me) think it's not such a great area, but it has (though I haven't lived there for 10 years) a fantastic library- big, well-stocked, and when I was a kid there were always terrific children's programs. And I loved visiting the Bookmobile during the summer.

When I was looking for my first teaching job I went to libraries in the towns I interviewed in, and Levittown by far had the nicest, IMO.

I don't know but for me, a great library is a must have since I read a massive amount of books a year, I love the programs & to me the library is the heart of the community.
Our school district is considered mediocre at best by the masses (I disagree) and the actual town that our library is in(one town away from mine) is not know as a "desirable" area. However our library is amazing IMO & I lived in several towns in Suffolk. Its not the newest building but its large, well maintained, fully staffed with friendly people, clean & loaded with great books & services.

I don't know. DH & I are currently living in Smithtown. They have a good school district and it's a good area, but compared to the library in the town I grew up in - the Smithtown Library system totally stinks.

what she said. I just moved to Smithtown and the libraries stink. I went to what most would call a middle-of-the road- school district (Middle country) but they have an outstanding library system.

In New York City, no, there isn't necessarily any connection between the neighborhood and the library. All the libraries are struggling in the city, though there are some nice ones in less than affluent areas, and some dumpy ones in lovely areas.

In the suburbs, I suppose a lot depends on the value the voters and the town government places upon the library. I would think better neighborhoods have nicer libraries since the tax base is higher. But if the town government or voters don't allocate that money towards the library, the library will stink. At least this is my best guess.

I'll give you an example . . . I was looking for baby name books. Between all 3 Smithtown libraries they have ONE. My old hometown library (that my card still works for Chat Icon ) had over a dozen.

Just to let all of my Smithtown friends know, there is a vote for a bond to build/expand on all 4 libraries. The vote is Tuesday, October 8th. I know I will definitely be voting. I got a mailing the other day. The new libraries look amazing!!

Thanks I, but
My taxes are high enough in Smithtown, they can redistribute the money that I already give them and put it towards the libraries. I don't need a better library if they want more of my tax money! Chat Icon

No...I don't see a correlation.

Last summer Elmont opened it's brand new library. It was the 2nd highest priced new construction in all of LI (over 11 million dollars). The library is absolutely gorgeous!!!! The neighborhood is not- at all!

Did you get the mailing on it last week? We did and it answered a lot of my questions.

The way I look at it is if this passes then hopefully my future children will have great libraries to grow up with like I did.

If you didn't receive anything I would stop by your library branch and they have pictures and I am sure they have copies of the mailing.

Do you have children? The library is an AWESOME resource for kids. Not just for books but for all the awesome programs they have going on that are totally free. My son attended a program at least a couple of times a week this Summer doing projects, scavenger hunts, etc. The mommy and me type programs and preschool programs are also fantastic and again, free. A fantastic library is a gem IMO.

Re: Local Town Library vs How Good is the Area

Actually, a very small portion of our taxes go to libraries. The majority goes to the schools (which is a good thing, don't get me wrong).

My friend works at Smithtown, and while she agrees there are problems, the new libraries look amazing. I hope the bond passes.

People that are regular library users are just happy to have one. They appreciate the hard working staff and the resources that are available. Those that don't use the library are the ones who vote no on bonds, because all they see is the "bottom line".

I work in a small village library, and our budget is not voted on by the residents. It comes from the Village. We just have to work with what we have, and the community really appreciates it.
