Lock Down procedures
We have had our required lock down drills. I lock the door, turn off the lights, and have the students get to one corner of the room so that the room looks empty. My question is; Are we supposed to stay put? I know that there is a great chance that a second gunman could be outside waiting but what if you can hear a gunman two doors down shooting people and then he (or she) is in the classroom next door? I would be tempted to have the kids leave through the window and we run for cover. (Assuming I will always have a room on the first floor.) Does your school have a set rule on this?

Lock Down procedures
To the best of my knowledge, we are to remain where we are.

Re: Lock Down procedures
We are supposed to remain silent in the room and the door only gets open by a police officer or school security officer, even if they knock and say its ok we can not open the door.

Lock Down procedures
I have no choice but to stay where I am ... I am on the fourth floor ... No way out ... I am looking into getting fabric to hang above my classroom window so I can cover and any gum a cannot see in it when I lock my door

Re: Lock Down procedures
The DOE has a new set of procedures this year..but I agree, I think our windows should be covered.

Re: Lock Down procedures
windows are no longer supposed to be covered so police can see inside the classroom, and the lights are supposed to remain on

On?! Is this a universal rule? My district is so behind!

Re: Lock Down procedures
My district is:
lights on, shades up, door locked, seated in furthest corner parallel to door (unseen from small door window) no talking.

Re: Lock Down procedures
We are doors locked, lights off, shades down to 4 inches open, students out of sight of door.
I asked one of my principals about leaving (I have egress doors in both buildings). She said no - the idea is that if you lead a line of students out the door they are easy targets. I have areas that I can lock students into if it were not a drill.
