Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
Well, DS isn't exactly potty trained yet since he still wears nightime diapers, but he has been in underwear two weeks and had few accidents the last week.
We are taking a long car trip soon though. What do you do in this situation? There are rest stops, but I do know there will be parts of the route where we need to drive a long time before getting to one (long for a 3 year old anyway). I really don't want to put him in a diaper--we only use them at night now, and he's doing so well.
I guess we could let him pee by the side of the road, but I'd hate to come to that. I should add, he hates potties--really prefers regular toilets, so I don't know if he'll use a travel potty.
TIA!

great question.
AJ is PT'ed but we are taking a very long trip to FL later in Oct. Still unsure how that's gonna go.

I'm really not sure! I'm thinking of putting one of those crib pads under him to soak it up a bit if he does have an accident.
DH suggested the side of the road, though I'm not keen on having him pee by the side of a highway!

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
At least you have a boy who can stand up and squirt. AJ can get a stick up her butt if I had her squat!
She won't do that anyway. She MUST have a seat and now she hates the potties as she thinks she's too 'big' for them. So yeah, same boat.
I have those wet pads and intend to use it. I also intend to plan our trip with rest stops and less liquid, if you get my drift.
I am bringing her potty. Just in case she really has to go. But hubby made a good point. Since were taking the SUV its not like I can hide that smell. So we'd have to bring it back in with us. So I suggested using the same little baggies we had to toss out her diapers (we have a ton of those) and line the 'bucket' part. Then its somewhat less messy but then we'd have to find a place to toss the baggie... ugh!
All I can say is our parents did it, guess we'll find a way.

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
Put him underwear with a pull up over it and make stops when you can.
The first few weeks that DS was trained I always had him in underwear, but put a pull up on over the underwear overnight, for his bus ride to and from school and when we would be in the car for a while. If he has an accident, he will still feel that he is wet and hopefully reinforce that he should wait to go on the potty, but you have the protection of the pull up to keep the mess to a minimum.
I can't take credit for this idea, but when the pediatrician saw it, she thought it was a great idea!

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
what we did with my DS was put him in a pull up for the car, but he told us each and every time he had to pee... we had a urnial (the ones from the hospital) for him to pee in... we would pull over on the side of the road, and he would pee in the bucket.
he stayed dry the entire time.

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
I got a car seat pad for the car seat. I kept the potty seat in the trunk and made many stops. I also put underwear on first and a pull up over it and then clothing.

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
we keep a potty in the car, but if he doesn't like to pee in the small potty that might not help you. I would bring it anyway, b/c if he has to go that bad he might just do it. If he is willing to pee on the side of the road I say do it-better than having accidents! Once my son realized that he could say he had to go and we would race to the next rest area, he suddenly had to go really bad and he couldn't hold it about every 1/2 hour. Then miraculously when we stopped for him to go, he would say actually I don't have to go anymore or he would pee about 5 drops! I don't know why I was in such a rush for him to be trained, it is way harder than keeping them in diapers imo! Good luck!

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
NO PULLUPS WHATSOVER!
Just stop at a rest stops and if there isn't one around, then pull over to the side of the road and have him go.
i always carry bottles of water with me when a bathroom isn't around (on road trips) mine used to always say either "I went already" or "I dont' have to go potty" only to have an accident a few minutes later or seeing them walking around doing the peepee dance lol If we are at a bathroom, I will either flush or poor water in the toilet (that ALWAYS makes mine go) or if you pull over the side of the road, the bottle of water works as well.. at home, I woudl sit mine down on the toilet and run the tap
:O)

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
We used to put DS in a pullup.
He would still tell us when he had to go potty.
My main concern was if he fell asleep, which he normally does on long trips in the car, he would have an accident in his sleep and I didn't want to have to worry about the cleanup on the road.
We never had any issues with him having more accidents because he was occasionally in a pull up.

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
My DS is PT'd and refused to go in a pull-up. So for long trips, I bought a car seat pad, a travel potty and a few changes of clothes. Honestly, he has never had an accident, he can hold it until we pull over. Even though he has been potty trained for quite some time I still try to stop every 2-3 hours and limit liquids a bit on long trips. In the beginning I did try putting a pullup on over his underwear, but like I said, he absolutely refuses to go in one.

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
Thanks for the suggestions! Plenty of good ideas for things we can try. Yeah, I thought we would bring the potty anyway--if he won't go sitting on it, maybe he'll pee into the cup that catches everything!
I think the longest he's been in the car is 40 minutes since he started wearing underwear, and we haven't had issues, but I could see a long trip being too long of a wait.

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
We got the potette which works for those long rides w/o a bathroom in sight.
You can also put it on top of a toilet seat so it has 2 uses.

Re: Long Car Trips and the Newly Potty Trained?
We made sure we made stops and had her go. I also have the portable potty just incase we weren't near a stop ( but never had to use since we plan for a stop/leg stretch) & I have the car set pad. Never had a accident!
