Long Island Jewish - Anyone deliver there? I have questions?
Tell me all about it!
When did you get a tour of the hospital?
What were the rooms like? How many women shared a room? Did anyone get a single room?
Do they keep the baby with you in your room or keep the baby in the nursery?
Does the nurses show you how to things (diaper changing, feeding, etc.)for 1st-time moms?
I know I have more questions, but my mind is drawing a blank Please feel free to add any other information, that I forgot to ask.
Thanks,

Re: Long Island Jewish - Anyone deliver there? I have questions?
i delivered in lij in 2002 and in 2004. i had two csections. I was treated so great at that hospital!
When did you get a tour of the hospital? I never went for a tour of the hospital. I knew i was going to have csections so i figured i would skip the tour. lol.
What were the rooms like? How many women shared a room? Did anyone get a single room? The rooms are nice. I didnt have a single room,i shared with one roomate. Which personally i liked, cause i liked talking to someone who had a brand new baby like me.
Do they keep the baby with you in your room or keep the baby in the nursery? Its your choice to either keep the baby with you or in the nursery at night. I choose the nursery only cause i knew my days of sleep were about to end real soon. lol.
Does the nurses show you how to things (diaper changing, feeding, etc.)for 1st-time moms?Yes, the nurses i had were great. They showed me how to feed the baby, diapers, etc. I was a person that never even held a baby till i had my own.
I know I have more questions, but my mind is drawing a blank Please feel free to add any other information, that I forgot to ask.

The rooms SUCKED, so thank GOD my husband agreed and got me a private room... LOVED IT..worth the $$$ and my husband was able to stay with us..
Do they keep the baby with you in your room or keep the baby in the nursery?
it was your choice, the first night she stayed in till 5am and they brought her in to be fed, the next night we kept her..
Does the nurses show you how to things (diaper changing, feeding, etc.)for 1st-time moms?
They show you how to do everything. THANK GOD I HAD NO CLUE!
I know I have more questions, but my mind is drawing a blank Please feel free to add any other information, that I forgot to ask.

Re: Long Island Jewish - Anyone deliver there? I have questions?
I delivered, vaginally, at LIJ... Labored for 18 hours
How was your room?L/D room was great enjoyed watching TV and listening to music through the cotractions. There was a free phone that we used to keep everyone updated. The chairs for the coaches looked pretty uncomfortable but DH was able to get a couple hours sleep...
My Recovery room was on the 3rd floor it is was bigger than those on the 2nd, I think it was because TJ had to be taken to the NICU because I ran a fever during delivery... We had the option to rent movies. I didnt get a roommate till the night before I was leaving.
How was the entire maternity ward? The entire ward was GREAT... Every nurse I came in contact with was very personable and knew their jobs. Chad Pennington's (NY Jets) wife delivered in the room right next to me and I was never made to feel any less important than her... That was great to me.
Were you made to feel comfortable? I was VERY comfortable... As I said before I labored for 18 hours, not in pain but I couldnt sleep... I told DH to get some rest because he had just gotten off of a 24 hour shift and I would need him to be up later... My nurse came and sat with me to help me tale the edge off for 2 hours until I drifted to sleep... How were visiting hours handled? Visiting hours for the fathers were 7am - 11pm. The coaches were given bands once I was admitted. They did not need passes. But others did... If I can remember only 2 visitors are allowed at a time.
Were you brought your baby right away? Since I ran I high fever, I was shaking, so right after he was born they tried to give him to me but I couldnt take him... They geve him to DH and my Mom... Once I calmed some I held him for about 10 minutes... Then they took him to the NICU for antibiotics.
Were the nurses helpful? My nurses were WONDERFUL I can't say anything bad about them... I was a little annoyed by the monitors on my belly but that wasn't their fault..
I had a GREAT experience at LIJ... Since DS had to go the NICU I have to tell you that the nurses there are amazing as well. I was able to go down whenever I wanted and they handled him wonderfully.
It was a very re-assuring thing to have that unit there for me just in case! And sure enough they had to care for my son and the whol experience was great.
But I can tell you all of these things and your experience can be completely different than mine... It all depends how many woman are in labor at the same time...

Re: Long Island Jewish - Anyone deliver there? I have questions?
I delivered there in 08/07.
We took lamaze and other classes there and got a tour with the lamaze class.
They were very crowded when I delivered, I was in a quad, not all that happy about it the first night when it was full but then I had a night alone and one night with only 1 roommate.
You can keep the baby in the room with you but not when you are sleeping. The baby also has to go to the nursery in the early morning for an hour or so for weighing and exams. This is when the breakfast cart comes so it works out well.
The nurses were very busy but the lactation consultant was great and when the nurses had time they answered questions. If you are worried about baby care I'd take a class it will make it all less unfamiliar and give you more confidence.
Feel free to FM with any other questions.

I delivered there in 2006 and had a similar experience. I was in a room with 4 people which I really didnt like. The nurses did show us how to do things like diapering and bathing DS. The nurses overall were nice but they were very busy.
When I was in labor they gave me an epidural very quickly and the nurse that was assigned to my room was wonderful. She helped me push and was very nice to DH and I.
If you have questions, you can FM me too!
