Longevity and Promotions
My cousin is going through this right now and I don't know what to tell her. What would you do in this situation?
She has been at her job 15 years. When she first got the job there was no college education needed and was basically an office position. Years later, more people are hired with degrees and the job changes but she learns from the bottom up and is able to still work there without a degree. Through the years her pay is pushed up a few times to keep up with the new people coming in. She then gets the same raises every year after that, that everyone else gets. She was told from the beginning that there really is no advancement in her dept. and she was fine with that as the job has lots of pros for her (close to home, close to her child's school, medical benefits, retirement, time off, etc.).
As the years have gone by she has been there the longest and there has never been any mention of any promotion or even that she could be considered higher up than the other employees that are not there as long.
She has mentioned this to her boss and basically has been told there is nothing they can do as they do not promote and her longevity really doesn't mean much after people have been there a few years.
Would you stay (and deal with it because it is tough out there looking for a job) because of the pros?
Oh and she said her starting pay was like $9/hour and now she is only up to $40,000 after all this time.

It wouldn't hurt for her to look around for something else. Not sure if she would get much more for a clerical job then what she is getting now. What exactly is her position and what field is she in.

If I were in her position I would stay. 40k a year is excellent pay for not having a degree. There's not much out there, and it would be very difficult to find a job that pays that much without a degree (at this time).
Also, there has to be a huge level of comfort. Being in the same place 15 years, I wouldnt want to leave. I would be too comfortable.

I agree. Starting salaries in my field for people with degrees, and sadly MASTERS degrees at that are around that amount.
With benefits and lots of job security to boot.........IMO I think she'd be crazy to leave, ESPECIALLY in this economy.

It depends on what type of work she does to be truly honest...
I know people who have/don't have degrees and the salary spectrum depends on the line of work.

It also depends on what field she's in..I think the only area that still pays good $$ to people without college degrees is Computers/Info Tech. My best friend dropped out of college but works in IT - he just landed a job as a Systems Admin making $90K in Farmingdale, only 20 min from his house. He definitely is the exception though.
