looking for a unique vacation idea
I've looked into The Ashram in Cali, but I think that's a little too intense for me.... anyone have unique vacation ideas?
I don't have anything specific in mind, just wanted to see what is out there!

Re: looking for a unique vacation idea
I highly recommend going to Iceland. DH and I went there and then to Denmark for our honeymoon. It is just incredible and unlike any place I have ever visited. It is absolutely beautiful and there is lots to do. Icelandair usually runs specials where you can fly to Iceland, stay for a few days, and then fly to another country (I think they fly to most of the Scandinavian countries) without paying anything extra.
We also went on a Mediterranean cruise that stopped in Turkey, Croatia, and Greece. It was awesome - highly recommended the cruise - or going to any of those 3 countries.
If you have any other questions, please let me know!!!!!!!

For a unique active vacation, check out Earthwatch. They have volunteer opportunities all over the world where you can work with a team of scientists on ecology and conservation issues.
You can track dolphins in Greece, join an archaeological dig in Peru, measure water pollution in the Czech Republic, or collect elephant dung () in Namibia.
There are also some US trips. I've been eyeing a moose study in Michigan.

Re: looking for a unique vacation idea
My brother just got back from New Zealand and it looked amazing.
I'm looking into Club Getaway in CT (about 2 1/2 hours from Suffolk) for me and DH. I've heard great things about it.
Club Getaway was Voted one of "The Top 10 Worlds Hottest Getaways" by The Travel Channel."The teachers, doctors, and lawyers who come here may be all grown-up, but they’re still hooked on the summer camp atmosphere." "Enjoy the newest grown-up pleasure trip...Club Getaway" New York Magazine

Re: looking for a unique vacation idea
I love, love, love the Baltic countries.. Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania. So different, so pleasant, so pretty, and so CHEAP. You can live like a king there with not too much $$ and still get a quasi-European feel. Great food, great drinks, and sooo different and great.

Re: looking for a unique vacation idea
a bit expensive, but i recommend a grand canyon river trip. it's such a great experience and well worth the money. here's the company i went with, highly recommend them.
Canyon Expeditions
i've also heard great things about this company EcoHike who do guided hiking trips in Grand Staircase/Escalante National Monument.
