Looking into new neighborhoods...
And we are trying to narrow it down. We're in Massapequa now, and we LOVE it here, would stay in a heartbeat and buy bigger here... but DH works in Seacaucus and this is his job for a good long while. We need to find something farther west. We are looking at a few different areas - RVC, Garden City, Herricks SD area, Great Neck, Port Wash & Manhasset. We are honestly hoping to move someplace that is exactly like our area now, maybe just a little closer to a downtown area than we are now. Any thoughts/comments/suggestions/other areas to check out would be greatly appreciated!

Floral park
We bought in Floral Park 10 months ago and love it here. I am not a fan of LI in general but I love everything about living here.

This might just be my personal opinion, but the south shore feel is very different than the north shore feel, especially in terms of community vibe. I was born and raised in East Meadow, currently own a home in Farmingdale and teach in Roslyn. If you are looking for something like a Massapequa, I don't think you'd be happy with a Port Washington, Manhasset, Great Neck, Roslyn, etc.

We have def heard that about Roslyn (why we already knocked it off the list). We really actually love north shore, dh's mom lived in manhasset for years. I should have been more specific with regards to that, we want a downtown area, homes with holiday lights, and trick-or-treaters.
Hadn't thought of Floral Park, thanks for the idea!

definitely Floral Park
Other areas I would suggest are Williston Park, New Hyde Park (area that is zoned for Herricks), and Garden City. I went to private school in this area, and a majority of the kids I went to school with were from these areas.
While I love love love Garden City (amazing SD), and one of my best friends is from there, we never really liked alot of the kids in GC compared to the other surrounding areas. Not saying all Garden City kids are spoiled or anything, but alot of the kids in my HS that were from GC were kind of bratty, felt more entitled than other kids, and were usually the ones in my school that caused the most drama lol... Alot of kids from Garden City went to rehab in college from what I've been hearing lately too, but you can't blame that on a specific area. I just know that when I was in HS, the drug issue was never as bad in Floral Park or New Hyde Park compared to GC.
Floral Park has that village feel that Garden City has, with more down-to-earth kids and fantastic schools. I really think it is the best town in Nassau County. We don't have a house there yet, but that is where we plan to buy our forever home for sure. If not there, then probably Williston Park
This is one of the most thinly veiled sweeping generalizations I have ever read.

Wow. Glad to know that my niece and nephew will have rehab in their future.

Wow. Just wow. Growing up I had friends from GC and I can assure you, none of them went to rehab in college. Also had close friends from Floral Park. Somehow, we all just got along.

Looking into new neighborhoods...
Yeah, never had that experience with gc, my ex was from gc and he was the most uptight prude of a dude I ever met... 22 year old virgin and all. Never ever touched pot. Growing up in VS I think I was a bit rougher than he was used to.

Re: Looking into new neighborhoods...
i totally do not mean to generalize at all!
This is just what happened 10-15 years ago with many of the kids from my area- We have had some school reunions in the last year, and it was like everytime we all got together, there was another kid we knew from GC that had gone through all this trouble. But like I stated in my above post, it could have just been our grade, and you can't judge a town based on that. I was just sharing what I noticed.
I'm sorry if I offended anyone. Buying in GC is obviously a smart choice financially, as you will definitely get that $$ back when selling. I did say that I love love love the town and my best friend is from there and is a very smart, successful individual. She did not go to private school and did not know the kids that I knew. She went to GCHS and absolutely loved it. I am sorry i said anything!!!!

Looking into new neighborhoods...
Both DH and I graduated from Herricks and our parents still live there. Of all the towns that combine to make Herricks SD the only one I would say that has a "downtown" area is Williston Park. WP also has TONS of holiday lights and trick or treaters there. That's where I grew up and still love visiting my parents there (We live OOS now). DH grew up in Manhasset Hills. It doesn't have that tight village feel but still a great place to live. I don't think you could go wrong anywhere in Herricks SD.

Re: Looking into new neighborhoods...
We looked in many neighborhoods. We considered Manhasset and Port Washington, but they are not like Massapequa. We moved a little further East in Nassau but if we moved back it would be only one of those 2 areas.

I have a lot of friends from gc, none went to rehab. I think out of the towns you listed RVC is the most similar to Massapequa.

Re: Looking into new neighborhoods...
Is it really worth moving from massapequa to Rvc? Ultimately, you are only cutting the commute by 15-20 mins.
Unless you are really going to cut the commute, it wouldn't be worth it for me. Can you look into jersey? My friend moved from locust valley to Springfield and loves it

Without traffic it's only 15-20, but in traffic it can be anywhere from 30-45 minutes... That is worth it. We really don't want to look in jersey, my family is in Valley Stream and they are extremely helpful with our son and we see them regularly. So that's another reason why RVC and GC are so appealing.

RVC. I don't personally believe any of the other areas you listed are anything like Massapequa. GC or Manhasset I would also suggest for various reasons. If you have family in Valley Stream, RVC seems like the best choice.

Re: Looking into new neighborhoods...
I had an apt in RVC for a short time and I will say it was slightly annoying b/c they are an incorporated village, so they have all their own rules. The one that was most annoying was no parking on the street overnight. Granted, you probably won't have more cars than driveway space, but it can be annoying.

I know exactly what you mean! I grew up in VS which had the same rules for parking. Any housework we need to do would also be a PITA. That's a really good point.

The same would apply for FPV and GC.

This is what i was thinking. I prob wouldn't move if it was only a 15-20 min difference in commute.

The towns you list all have different price ranges for homes and what you can get for the price you pay also varies a lot in each of the areas you listed. How much is the max you are looking to spend on your home and with that will the home have to be move in ready or are you willing to do work? I would start with that price point and take a look at houses in each of the areas in that price range. I think you will find that might help you to narrow down your choices...
We have done all that, I was just lookin for comments/info on the townS themselves... The info shared has been very helpful!

Looking into new neighborhoods...
RVC has a great location and downtown area. Tons of shopping/ restauranrts, great train schedule too. Great schools. Great rec center for kids. Close to Southern State Parkway. Own electric utility company. Awesome high school sports program!
Cons: Village of RVC is a real PITA. Parking. Taxes are very high. Can be very competitive in the sense keeping up with the Jones. I don't feel like it's always a very open/accepting community unless you kind of fit that RVC mold.
My good friend lives in RVC so these are just generalization I've heard from her. Hope that helps a little.
