Looking into new neighborhoods...
My grandpa lives in Williston Park, Herrick's SD. It's a nice little town worth checking out.

This might just be my personal opinion, but the south shore feel is very different than the north shore feel, especially in terms of community vibe. I was born and raised in East Meadow, currently own a home in Farmingdale and teach in Roslyn. If you are looking for something like a Massapequa, I don't think you'd be happy with a Port Washington, Manhasset, Great Neck, Roslyn, etc.
We have def heard that about Roslyn (why we already knocked it off the list). We really actually love north shore, dh's mom lived in manhasset for years. I should have been more specific with regards to that, we want a downtown area, homes with holiday lights, and trick-or-treaters.
Hadn't thought of Floral Park, thanks for the idea!
I live in one of the areas mentioned above and love it! We mainly go to the village of Port Washington or Roslyn to eat and do things with the kids. Manhasset also has a little downtown as well on Plandome. Roslyn is definitely more centered around the Jewish community so many residents typically frequent the JCC BUT Roslyn is huge and there are many different areas that encompass it. To add to the list, I would check out: Albertson, Searington, Manhasset Hills, East Williston, Williston Park, Roslyn Heights, Roslyn, Sea Cliff, Glenwood Landing.

Just wanted to also include this link when comparing schools-

Many times we think a district is 'amazing' and once you delve a little deeper, you find out that its an average district like any other...

I lived in great neck for a while but we had a co-op. Loved the parks, the summer concerts/activities, and being able to walk to the train and everything in town. we couldn't afford to buy the house we wanted there but if we stayed I would have preferred the areas that go to the south high school. Also, jus FYI, you aren't going to find a lot of holiday lights. The streets around my area were almost completely dark at Christmas, didn't bother me but you mentioned it as something you were interested in.

Yes, that is something I would note about the towns you listed. Some are more "diverse" than others in a more extreme way than you would typically find. For example - Great Neck is VERY predominantly Jewish where Manhasset is the opposite. Herricks school district has a greater Asian and Indian population than most. Port Washington and Garden City are more of a mix. Not sure if this matters to you but it's definitely something to note.
I wouldn't consider Garden City to be mixed at all.

Looking into new neighborhoods...
I live in Suffolk but work in Nassau. I have been to Roslyn and glen head often for work and they seem like very nice towns. I have recently been to port Washington as well and that was VERY nice. My aunt lives in garden city for the past 20 years. She loves it. My 3 cousins graduated from the high school within the last 5 years and they loved it. My aunt has a very community feel. The neighbors are all friends, go on vacation together etc. I don't have any other personal experience. Good luck in your search!

Yes, that's so true and really important to consider.
For example, I've seen people on these boards say that my school district is "bad," but it actually has virtually identical (and some higher) graduation, retention, etc., rates to a school district that people on these boards call "amazing."
That website is great!

I grew up in GC and now live in RVC. (Graduated about 15 years ago and my siblings and friends did not go to rehab  ).
I like both towns a lot.
I think GC is a little nicer overall. The community pool is amazing and it's the thing I miss most, especially having young kids now. It was not diverse. It was not religiously diverse AT all. I had 2 Jewish kids in my graduating class out of about 250. It is diverse in that some of the kids are Italian America and some kids are Irish American. 
For us, RVC is more walkable. We live in an area where I can take the stroller to the park, the doctor, the library, the supermarket, the post office, etc. I LOVE that.
My neighbors were great in both places and there are plenty of Christmas lights in both places (although we go to Dyker Heights or Franklin Square to see more fun lights).
Both schools systems seem great to me - but none of the names on your list seemed bad.
Many of my friends moved back to GC - but my husband was against this as he wanted to start fresh together somewhere. Otherwise, it would have been a great option.
FM me if you have any specific questions.
ETA: It is easy to get to the Southern State from RVC. GC - you have to drive about 10 minutes + to get to a major highway. It is centrally located - not far to get to the north shore or south shore - but if he is going through Staten Island every day - I would totally go south shore.

Parts of Port Washington may not work for you if DH is driving to NJ everyday. The northern parts of Port are pretty far from the highways and can get really backed up. Same thing with parts of Great Neck.
Garden City might be your best bet. Close to highways. Nice sense of community, cute downtown area. They have things like summer Fridays, where they close off a portion of the street and have bands, outdoor eating set up. A lot of families come out for that.

I agree the floral park or even new hyde park might be a good option for you only for commuting reasons. And if you're looking for a comparable community to Massapequa I would even suggest franklin square. It's def a bit congested but it's the same type of families. All 3 are in the same school district but I THINK either floral park memorial or nhp are on the top of the ranking for the 5 district schools.
