Re: Looking to buy a Digital SLR Camera
We just bought the Nikon D60 Digital SLR. Everything came to about $1000.00. We got the Camera that came with i think 18-55MM lens. An extra lens(55MM-200MM), the case, and 4GB memory card. IT was a package deal online at best buy. I printed it out, went to the store and they honored it. We absolutely LOVE it! It takes such great pics.

Re: Looking to buy a Digital SLR Camera
I have a Nikon D60 and it came with the 18-55 VR lens for 493.00 including tax from Cameta Camera. I just got the 55-200 VR lens for 200.00 so a little under 700.00. I love my D60. However since u have 1200.00 budget go for the D90.

Just cause you have a budget, doesn't mean you have to spend it all
You need to figure out if you want to do Nikon or Canon. Both are major players so regardless, you will have a great camera.
More of an entry level camera will be a Nikon D40 or D60 // Canon XS or XSI Nikon D90 or Canon Ti1 is if you want to capture HD Video but I would advise you if you are going to edit and playback HD footage, do you have the computer hardware to support that. Not many ways to play back HD files these days.
Regarding a higher megapixel camera, do you plan to extremely blow up a picture to take a portion of the picture you taken by doing a digital zoom on the computer..then higher megapixels doesn't matter.
D40 = XS D60= XSI
I sent you a FM regarding a good deal at the moment for the 2 Canon cameras talked about above.
I hope this helps you and anybody else interested in SLR

Add me to the list of Canon fans
For dSLR users this is a great site for when you want to try a lense before you buy it or just need a certain lense for vacation.
BorrowLenses.com
I've used them a slew of times and have never had a bad experience

I also have a Canon - the XTi which I got right before the XSi came out. The XSi has more features and you can use SD cards with it (as opposed to my XTi which I can only use with Compact Flash cards). I am very happy with my camera and the pics I've taken with it! Now, just to learn a bit more about the manual controls!

Re: Looking to buy a Digital SLR Camera
I have the Nikon D60 -- I received it as a gift so I am not sure how much it cost.
It takes beautiful pictures but I am new to all of this so I know I am not using properly or to its fullest potential.

The d90 is compatible with more lenses so I probably should add that to my post. If you want to become more involved in photography and not just family pics etc--go for the D90. The D40 and D60 have restrictions on the lenses they can use. All good cameras though. If I had the cash I would have bought the D90 over my D60 since alot of lenses I am interested in are not compatible .

Re: Looking to buy a Digital SLR Camera
I'd get the Canon XSi body, 50 mm 1.8 lens and a zoom lens.

I research more Canon once I decided between Canon and Nikon so i'm not familiar with Nikon lenses. Canon EOS lenses are all the same.
It sounds like you have more experience with SLR cameras vs. the OP that is very new to this and probably use the camera in "easy" mode.
The the OP must decide if they want to take this to another level or not..My OP was entry level which i think i said.
You may want to see if Nikon offers a body upgrade program. I know Canon has one.. I did something similar. The Ti1 (Nikon D90) was announed when I brought my XSi (D60). I returned the XSi and pruchased the Ti1.

i've been holding off upgrading the body and investing in lenses instead. i think my next addition will be a 35 prime. i need a wider angle zoom as well, thinking about a sigma ...
to the OP - whatever you do, you MUST get an external flash as well
