Lost my beloved Murphy today..
Today we had to put down my 10 year old toy poodle, Murphy. It is just devastating because he wasn't even sick!!
The night before last he started with this weird cough. Then he started spitting up blood. Within an hour he couldnt walk well, wouldnt eat or drink and wasnt going to the bathroom. I stayed up with him all night long. Called the vet the first thing in the morning and brought him in.
It was evident right away that it wasn't good. Turns out that he had some autoimmune disease that were attacking his platelets. His blood wasn't clotting and there was a chance he would bleed to death. He basically told me that it would be in Murphy's best interest to have him put to sleep. I felt my heart break in two. I held him while they did it and talked to him as he left me. It went very fast.
My daughter is so sad. She's only 5 and ADORED him. He was my first baby. I had no time to get used to the fact that there was something wrong. I just can't wrap my brain around it. I'd like to think my Gram was calling him because today was the 4 year anniversary of her death.
I will never forget my baby, Murphy. I hope you are running and playing with all the other dogs this family has lost. You were one of the best things that I ever had in my life. I love you and will miss you always.

Re: Lost my beloved Murphy today..
Thank you everyone. I feel like I did the wrong thing. Everything was just so expensive. When I asked what we could have done (before making the decision) the doctor seemed not to agree with trying to keep him alive. He said it would be at least a week in ICU..iv meds...tests. He said the clotting could be treated but the underlying cause was the problem. He said it would cost thousands and thousands. We just don't have that kind of money. He also pointed out that he was 10 and not a "young" dog. Nothing was written in stone. BUt I STILL feel like I killed my dog. I will never get over it. Ever.

Even spending thousands and thousands he'd have been suffering, you would never want to see him that way. I can't tell you how to feel but please know you did the right thing. You gave him a loving home and a beautiful life. I know it's torture to loose a pet, I lost my dear bunny while on vacation, and still miss himdearly and feel like he died because I left him.
Hugs to you

I am so sorry for your loss. You did what was best - please don't feel guilty. You gave him a happy life where he was totally loved and when he needed you to, you let him go painlessly and peacefully.

Re: Lost my beloved Murphy today..
Dear NYCChic Just want to give you a perspective from an animal communicator, who is NOT doing a reading on your situation BUT would like to share what I've learned from other situations like this. In general animals do not like to be treated for serious medical problems. ESPECIALLY if they are to be given medications that have side effects!!!!!They prefer "The Needle". All animals inherently know about the needle and do not consider it a bad alternative to life with you. They consider it a way to gain freedom from a body that no longer serves their missions in life. Humans tend to have fears related to the "unknown" aspects of what happens after death, animals do not have these fears whatsoever So if you can wrap your head around the idea that your beloved dog has simply dropped this physical body but its energetic self is still quite alive AND WELL and you gave your dog the most UNSELFISH GIFT possible by not making it about you (ie..can't do this, need more time to adjust, ect) You are very brave and each day you will cry a little less
