low-lying placenta?
Well to add to my super duper crap week, my OB just called me to tell me that my placenta is low-lying. What the heck does that mean? She told me not to worry and that they will keep an eye on it.
Is anyone familiar with this, im nervous?
ETA: Was anyone else told no intercourse?

Re: low-lying placenta?
I had a low lying placenta. I just had an additional sono closer to my due date to make sure it moved up. I forget what the percentage was but it was a high percetage rate of those that move up.
Is it just low lying or is completely covering your cervix?

Re: low-lying placenta?
They found this at my 20 week sono, the Dr also told me not to worry about it, the placenta will usually move on it's own, I just had my 36 week sono and it did move to where it should be. The worst that will happen is if is doesn't move by the time you go into labor they will have to do a c-section. From what I've heard and read, most times the placenta will move on it's own.

They said low and posterior, Im assuming that means it isn't covering my cervix?

Re: low-lying placenta?
I have this, and they found it at the 19 wk sono. It only effects how you would deliver. If the placenta does not move, and winds up covering your cerivx, they would do a c-section.
If it moves, no problems at all...that is all it means.

I have it too, no need to worry, my SIL had it also, it ended up moving the last week of her pregnancy. No sex for us, but I think that is because of my bleeding not the placenta? I believe placenta previa is the correct name for the condition

Re: low-lying placenta?
Mine was low lying at my 12 week sono. By 20 weeks it had moved completely. It just means that while the placenta is not completely covering the cervix, it is within a couple of mm or cm (can't remember which). If it stayed too close to the cervix you *might* not be able to have a vaginal delivery.
The ultrasound tech and my midwife said it moves 95% of the time, so don't worry.

Re: low-lying placenta?
I had a low lying placenta when I was pregnant with DS.
I was told to not do strenuous activity, no heavy lifting and no sex.
At the 20 week ultrasound, the placenta had moved up and I was in the clear.

Re: low-lying placenta?
A friend of mine had a low lying placenta. She was told to take it easy for a little while and no intercourse...I think about a month. Alot of the time it corrects itself which is what happened to her.
