Lowering our immune systems?
I know we’ve probably all seen it on FB, the YouTube video of 2 emergency drs talking stats but more importantly , taking about the body ability to build immunity. We depend on germs, bacteria and less harmful virus to strengthen it. Being Inside, bleach , Lysol, purell and when we do go out, cover your face and then come home and boil your hands.... we May have a hard time fighting off the smallest germs when we finally do get back to “normal”
I of course don’t have any probiotics around but Ordered from target. Hopefully that will help (on top of my multi, vitD and C I take daily)
But have you considered this? What it can do to us immunity wise? I honestly didn’t even think of that until now.

Re: Lowering our immune systems?
Yes! I actually cut down a lot on using hand sanitizer for this reason. Almost completely. I'm sticking with just washing hands.
I haven't thought about a probiotic. But I've never taken them before anyway. I don't take a multi vitamin. When I did in the past I would get headaches. I get my blood work done every year during my physical. And if I'm lacking something I will take that. Right now I'm not taking anything.

Re: Lowering our immune systems?
Interesting. I hadn't really thought about it but it does make sense. I always noticed before this that the biggest germophobes seemed to be the ones always getting sick. I do take an immunity supplement that since I started taking it 5 years ago I have rarely gotten sick. And i used to be sick constantly. I have upped that since the virus has been around and am vigilant about vitamin D and a few others as well. Probiotics have really done nothing for me in the past. When i was constantly sick I was taking them religiously and still sick all the time. they also make my stomach worse because i have small intestinal bacteria overgrowth...so adding qny bacteria back in flares my intestinal issues.

Lowering our immune systems?
I’d think your immune system would be similar to how it always has been. I know people who are literally sick all the time and others who are never sick. It’s not like your white blood cells are going to forget what to do. I’m washing my hands as I normally would - not excessively. I only use hand sanitizer right after I leave a store.

Re: Lowering our immune systems?
People don’t take care of themselves and wonder why they are always sick. Eating on a regular basis. You need gas to run a car. You need gas to run your body. Get enough sleep. Dress for the weather.
I never use hand sanitizer, just clean with soap and water.
Just a little common sense which many have lost when they have gotten book smart.

I also truly believe your immune system is luck of the draw. Maybe genetic? I know people who eat the world's most perfect diet, take supplements, exercise, meditate, etc etc and are always sick. Others who eat like shit, smoke, drink and are never sick. I think.you need to be smart of course and try to be healthy but i think a lot of immunity is what you're born with

You need to eat some dirt. Which basically means you can’t have everything clean to be healthy. Just like having too much antibiotics are bad, so is hand sanitizer as you will eventually become immune.

You don’t become immune to hand sanitizer. Bacteria that are resistant to it survive and reproduce, making it less effective over time.

Re: Lowering our immune systems?
I actually think about this all the time, which is why I havent added extra vitamin intake. I take my usual, Vitamin D3, elderberry, and fish oil.I wash my hands constantly, and hate hand sanitizer. When I do go the store, I only wear a mask. I dont use gloves (only when I am pumping my own gas). When I get into the car I have wipes I clean my hands with. I have always been that way anyway.

Lowering our immune systems?
I remember hearing this years ago when they told everyone to stop using antibacterial hand soap. Then all of a sudden you couldn’t find the antibacterial soap anywhere. I don’t think anyone really knows and a medical expert will speculate and then all of a sudden there’s an article that everyone’s listening to

My Ex-husband had MRSA (Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus). Thankfully he didn't need to be hospitalized but it was pretty bad on his arm. It finally went away for a few months but came back 2 more times over the next year or 2. He would use hand sanitizer , antibacterial soap and antibacterial lotion through out the day. His doctor insisted he stop using them because it was killing all the healthy bacteria.
This was a big reason I stopped using hand sanitizer. Until recently with Covid. But I decided to really cut back on using it these days, almost completely.

Re: Lowering our immune systems?
I'd like to think that humans as a whole aren't so fragile that a few months without getting germs means we lose our entire immune system.
Yes, over the long term, we need to get germs on a regular basis to stay healthy. "They" have been telling us for years to go easy on the hand sanitizer and sprays.

Re: Lowering our immune systems?
I am rarely ever sick. I only wash my hands after I go to the bathroom. We wear shoes in the house. My kids shower way less often than they should and they eat without washing their hands most days. We are gross. And we are very, very rarely sick. I think it's mostly genetic but I also feel like the people who always getting sick are the germaphobes who are constantly using hand sanitizer and washing their hands. I think letting yourself be exposed to germs builds your immune system.

Re: Lowering our immune systems?
I’ve been thinking about this for years with the way anti-bacterial everything is out there. I was never an anti-bacterial person. Only when I knew that I couldn’t wash my hands, I used it.
I still don’t use it very much now either. Since I have my own little germ enclave, I will scrub my hands when I get home and disinfect any door knobs I have touched. But I only do this when I go out (I wash my hands more, lol).
It’s an interesting theory and I do think we will have more super bugs come around. We were kind of due for a pandemic like this anyway.

I also only wash my hands after I use the bathroom. I almost always eat without washing my hands first. I am a teacher, I will tie kids shoelaces, and then pop a chip in my mouth. My co teacher is a complete germaphobe. Washes her hands all day. I have never once, in my 4 years at the school, called out sick. Not once. She takes multiple sick days a year- she gets strep, stomach bugs, colds, flu- whatever the kids bring into the classroom, she gets. I guess there is a positive to being gross. LOL

Lowering our immune systems?
DH and I were just talking about this too, after we heard one of the (many) doctors on the news mention this. Especially when it comes to kids whose immune systems are being built up and this whole notion of keeping schools closed for god knows how long. Bottom line is that humans aren’t intended to live in bubbles of safety. Will a few weeks hurt - I’m sure not. But long-term, hiding is not the answer IMO, and I do think over time it would have a negative impact on our immune systems.

Lowering our immune systems?
I do feel social distancing and Uber cleaning will hurt our immune systems.
I was out of work for 11 months. I was generally healthy before but got sick within days of starting my new job. Also - after about 8 months, I volunteered at the kids school and came down with a horrible upper respiratory illness.
Whenever school starts i anticipate my kids to go for 2 days before they are home sick again.

Agree. Hidng in our homes can't be the long term plan.

A healthy adult immune system will not be impacted by a few months of reduced germ exposure. Perhaps if we spent years like this it may be a problem (though our immune systems will be the least of our worries if we live like this for years) but a few months isn’t a big deal.

I completely agree with this. The overuse of antibacterial blows my mind. All these organisms...good bacteria, bad bacteria, yeast, fungus, and even viruses need each other to keep themselves in check and balanced. This happens outside and believe it or not within ourselves as well. When we get sick, this balance is not balanced anymore and one of these organisms have taken the upper hand. Nature works beautifully and so amazingly! Our bodies work amazingly as well! Yes genes do have something to do with how our immune system will tend to be but it’s not absolute, or even the majority. Genes count (kuddos for u if ur parents are from different parts of the world!), what we’re expose to in the womb counts (what our mother eats, drinks, the environment she lives in), how we come to the world counts, what we eat as babies count, the type of diet we have while growing up counts, the type of microorganisms we’re expose to counts, etc. Not one thing is absolute, everything counts! Ppl that tend to get more sick during the winter time is not because cold and flu viruses only exist during the cold months (they’re around us and within us all the time) but because ppl tend to have low resilience during the cold months due to days getting shorter and shorter, our diets not changing during the cold weather (as the weather gets colder is important to eat food that’s easier to digest so we can conserve energy, meaning the colder, and more raw food we eat/drink, the more energy the body will need to aid the digestive system instead of using that energy for our defenses), lack of sleep, not slowing down, stress. All these things are major components for our body to not work as usual and have more tendency to getting sick. This is why now is SO important for us to go out, get direct sunlight, be less stress and worried, be mindful with our diet, eat what’s in season, etc. It can make a big difference!
