madonna vs. mel gibson
I DON'T want to start issues (and this is not to be the start of a mel Gibson thread by any means) I was just thinking this morning how I don't feel as though Madonna was criticized or received any flack for dressing up the way she did at her recent concerts (i.e. crown of thorns on a cross). No one questioned whether her career was in jeopardy. And yet Mel Gibson, while VERY WRONG for what he did, is probably going to be blacklisted in Hollywood. BOTH individuals insulted sacred religions.

When "like a prayer" came out Madonna was blacklisted!

she caught some flack for that...but she didn't wear it for "like a prayer"...it was for "oh, father"...and it wasn't really inflammatory... more like thought provoking....I don't know how to explain it...
eta: I agree with redhead, I don't think that these two situations can be compared...

i do rememeber a thread a while back talking about madonna
but i must say...IMO there is a HUGE difference between the two DEFINITELY!! you can't really compare Madonna's antics with out right saying "f'ing Jews" or "I hate Jews"
and btw, I was just telling DH the other day how much I despise Madonna. she was cool in the 80's and early 90's, but she's just pathetic now, IMO. she's a has-been.

I personally think they were both offensive. In my opinion, and this is in no way meant to cause controversy, it has become acceptable and tolerated to criticize christianity and catholicisn and unacceptable to criticize other religions.
Again, this is just how it seems to me. (I am not really a practicing member of any religion)

Re: madonna vs. mel gibson
I had no idea the Mel Gibson thing was going on until this week trhat my-cowroker told me about it. I have always said that when people are drunk their true feelings do come out and I feel he said what he said because that is how he really feels. There is no excuse in the world that can get him out of this one IMO. I am still in shock over it. Madonna did push the limits by doing certain things, but I think that's part of being the super star she is.I'm not a Madonna fan, but I think they are two diff. things IMO.

Re: madonna vs. mel gibson
When have any religions NOT be questioned?
Can anyone honestly say they haven't questioned their own religion themselves?
Do i think it is right to use religion the way she did in her last tour...no. i didn't care for that.
but i gotta respect her on some level in that she definitely took the time to learn about it, question it, and then find something that she felt was right for her.
There is nothing remotely redeeming about Mel Gibson... I used to love him...loved his movies. And now i am absolutely disgusted...
The difference between the two is the HATRED that Mel Gibson has.. And sadly he liked to portray himself soo respectful in the media prior to this...WHAT A FRAUD

I agree that realigions have always been questioned and they will always continue to be - which I think is a good thing. I am just saying that it is considered more "taboo" to criticize some religions and not others.
As to Madonna's or Gibson's motives or true feelings - I do not know them personally so I cannot say. Religion is so deeply personal and naturally controversial that no one will ever agree...which is obviously unfortuante.

i really do not see that one religion is ok to criticize as opposed to another..
Mel...is not really even criticizing is he? He is spewing hatred
I don't think you have to KNOW him so hear that message loud and clear

I agree.
I've witnessed this in conversation MANY times w/ my friends (who are all of different religions)... For example- when discussing history and/or religion it's always acceptable by my friends to bash christianity/Catholism, etc, but if I, on the other hand, say I don't agree with Israeli policy, then i'm called an anti semite... when it's about GOVERNMENT policy and not religion. Of course, this isn't the same as Mel saying "jews are the route of all the world's problems" which is just a ridiculous comment (we all know that MEN are the problem of all the world's problems ) I do think people will get over it though- think of what people have said over the years about other's - after a few months, they've always come around.

What Mel Gibson did was not simply critizing it was spewing hatred towards a group, big difference IMO.

I don't think the situations are different at all. They were both offensive. I don't think Madonna was being unique or artistic.
