Re: madonna vs. mel gibson

I don't think the situations are different at all. They were both offensive. I don't think Madonna was being unique or artistic.
BUT you cannot say she was saying or pointing out HATRED...
they are very different
you might want to say they are both offensive...to each their own
BUT one is about HATE... and that isn't Madonna....not by a long shot

I think both situations are offensive, but only Mel Gibson spewed hatred for all members of a particular religious group.

I don't know. Madonna has pushed my buttons since the late 80's. She never came out and did what Mel Gibson did, but I don't think that she is merely "questioning" the faith she was raised in. That's my opinion.

Re: madonna vs. mel gibson
what did Mel Gibson actually say - I know it was something hateful towards Jews, but what were his actual words? Somehow, I missed this.
I think Madonna does many things that are offensive to different groups of people, but to take offense or be the victim of hatred are two different things.

Re: madonna vs. mel gibson
for most of the 80's i would definitely say she was questioning.. not just religion but pretty much everything that was "expected" of her...
Now i feel she does it for entertainment value...which i can understand why some are offended...
but AGAIN....it isn't HATE

Re: madonna vs. mel gibson
I found madonna's actions offensive and a mockery of the catholic religion...but I can at least deal with that..why? Because i think she is screaming for attention and it comes across as pathetic in my opinion. She was awesome back in the day...now? I feel like screaming "GIVE IT A REST".
Mel Gibson on the other hand? I once admired him and thought of him as a great actor and a decent person (So it seemed..). NOW? I would never be able to watch him act again without thinking of the disgusting words that left his mouth. It truly sounded like blatant hatred, and thats what makes the difference in the two in my opinion

Re: madonna vs. mel gibson
Um, no, you're comparing apples to oranges. Even if you find what Madonna does distasteful, some would say it is her artistic expression, and I would assume, well thought-out. It is meant to be thought-provoking.
What Mel Gibson did was not intended in any form to be "artistic expression". Granted, I didn't agree with the movie, but I didn't think twice because it had the same intention - artistic expression meant to provoke debate. But, blurting out discriminatory epithets while angry/drunk has nothing to do with artistic expression... it's stupidity, at best, and he deserves all the flack he's getting for it.

But Madonna didn't say to the crowd Christians s*ck.
I have to agree with Red two totally different things.
I agree too - totally different scenarios.
I also highly doubt that Gibson will be blacklisted. I'll say it again, if Polanski can win an Oscar after fleeing to France after RAPING a 14 year old girl...and Woody Allen can have an affair with his adopted DAUGHTER and then go on to marry her and still draw a box office, Gibson will be fine.
