Make-your-own dishwasher soap?
Anyone have a tried-and-true formula for this? DH and I keep a green and cruelty-free household. Just got ourselves a dishwasher (yee-ha!) and finding dishwasher soap on the market that meets our (:cough: MY) standards with this kind of stuff is proving to be a bit difficult.
Or, if anyone knows of a brand that is cruelty-free, that would be welcome as well!
TIA!

Have you looked at Ecover? Not sure if it's cruelty-free, but it's the best green product I've found.

Thank you! I did some research and it is cruelty-free. :)

I have a recipe for it... I recently stopped using it because I wasn't sure about the borax. Let me know if you want it.

I'd love it. All of the recipes I have seen call for borax, and I'm a little iffy about it...what drove you to stop using it? And what do you use in place of it? Thanks.
As for the PP, Seventh Generation does test on animals so it's a no-go for me. :( They don't do it themselves, but they do use a third-party company to do the testing. Sucks!

Re: Make-your-own dishwasher soap?
Borax is derived from Borate, which is a mined mineral. Borax is completely non-toxic, you can eat it will no ill effects. (not that anyone would want to eat it). It is used for cleaning, laundry detergent booster, as a fertilizer ingredient, and a non-toxic way to kill ants (it is toxic to their digestive systems).
Here are some great uses for : Borax
eta : not to sound like a know-it-all, Borate was one of the products I bought and exported for use in fertilizers.

Here's the link to the dishwasher detergent:
DIY Dishwasher Soap
I had read that borax might be unsafe for children, so I stopped using it in the dishwasher. I still use it in my laundry detergent and household cleaners. I will probably go back to using it since I really hate the stuff from the grocery store.
Here's a good website discussing the "great borax debate":
Borax; Safe or Not?

Re: Make-your-own dishwasher soap?
Thank you both for the info! Will take a look at the links you guys posted. On the plus side, DH and I are CF by choice so we don't really have to worry about whether or not its safe for kids...though I do have to look into whether its safe to wash our cats' dishes using something with borax. Thanks again!
