I need to overhaul my makeup brushes. What do you think are your top 5 must have/most useful brushes are?
Which Brand? I dont want to spend a fortune, but I dont want to cheap out either.

Re: Makeup Brushes
I get mine at CVS - the store brand. I think they're great. I MUST have a kabuka brush (for days when I use powder foundation) a foundation brush (for days when I use liquid) a big puffy brush for blush or bronzer, and an eyeshadow brush.

Re: Makeup Brushes
I have a set like the below and it was not very expensive at all. The brand is Pueen.
Then I have a few brushes from Bare Escentuals (kabuki, crease defining, blush and foundation brush). And I have an angled kabuki from Sigma that I love! The brushes I use the most are the foundation, eyeshadow/crease defining and big bronzer brush.

Makeup Brushes
I love my Sephora airbrush foundation brush. I bought a Sephora stippling brush and I'm not crazy about it. I have always liked the bare minerals brushes, I just wish the handles were longer.

Re: Makeup Brushes
Ecco tools sells an inexpensive set that gets recommended a lot. I have seen it in my local grocery store and at CVS.
I have the following brushes and most of them were free as gifts with purchase: Foundation brush - purchased Sonia Kashuk at Target Blush Brush - bare minerals free GWP Long Eye shadow brush - Lancome free GWP Short Eye shadow brush - Lancome free GWP (I have 2 of these) Concealer Brush - Lancome free GWP

Re: Makeup Brushes
My eyeshadow brushes are MAC. They are expensive but I've had them for close to 10 years
My blusher and bronzer brush are from Sephora. They have also lasted me forever.

Re: Makeup Brushes
The real techniques brushes posted above are good. They are mad by the same company as eco tools, but they have more of a variety in types of brushes.
They are probably by favorite affordable brand.
I generally prefer synthetic for creams & liquids (so mostly, foundation/concealer) and real hair for powders, so I do spend more money on those brushes.
I love my MAC eye brushes ( 217 & 219) but Crown makes decent real hair inexpensive brushes.
I have a few Wayne Goss & Billy B brushes ( they are makeup artist) from Beautylish that are very good. I want to get more Wayne Goss eye brushes, but they are out of stock.

Makeup Brushes
I like my Eco Tools. I also got Sonia Kashuk brushes from Target that held up really well- I did wash them regularly and they really lasted- I have had them a long time. I also got a set from Sephora that also lasted a long time- but I think they've gotten pricy. Avon's are hit or miss, some have lasted a while but others fell apart pretty quickly.

Re: Makeup Brushes
If you really want to invest I would suggest taking a look at Tom Ford makeup brushes and their cosmetics
I have their brushes and cosmetics and they are absolutely amazing, and previously I only used Chanel and it blows Chanel away
foundation brush
Bronzer brush
eyeshadow brush
eyeshadow
I have a few eyeshadow quads and they are wonderful, and their nail polishes and lipsticks are incredible!

$72 for a makeup brush seems reasonable.

There's definitely a markup for the TF brand/name, but they do get good reviews. If you use your brushes daily, it might be considered worth the "investment."

Re: Makeup Brushes
I purchased these as well. I find that I prefer my Sephora eyeshadow brushes over the RT, but I use the RT for foundations (liquid, powder, concealer, etc..)

Very reasonable! Actually quite cheap! My lipgloss brush retails for over $500.

$72 is just a drop in the bucket when I put the brush inside my $18,000 tote bag.

She never said it was reasonable. She said it was an investment. I have make brushes I bought 15 years ago that I spent a lot of money on and they are still in perfect condition. Certain things are worth the money because they last.

The OP did state she didn't want to spend a fortune, but she also stated she didn't want to cheap out either and asked the members of the board for their suggestions. People gave their experiences & opinions. I would imagine the OP is smart enough to disregard suggested brushes if she feels they're out of her price range or not worth it.

I'm sorry, one of those brushes the money flaunter posted was $115. There is no one that can think that is reasonable. By not cheap out, i'm guessing the OP meant maybe $30 range, just a guess, I don't know her at all, but most of us on this board aren't rolling in the dough.
But to the OP, the best thing to do is go to an Art Supply store, you can get much better quality brushes than you will from any beauty line, and not spend anywhere near the amount of a TF brush!

What if it was someone else who raved about Tom Ford brushes? Would you be as offended?
One doesn't need to be rolling in dough to purchase a $100 makeup brush. I see plenty of folks on these boards who drop money things like concert tickets, facial products (GlamGlow comes to mind ), entertainment for childrens' birthday parties, among other various things.
It's all about perspective. I hardly think $100 for a "tool" you use regularly/daily and potentially for at least a couple of years (if not more) is all that out of line.
Again, being that many of us do not know the OP or her definition of "reasonable" as it wasn't clearly defined by a number, I see nothing wrong with the suggestions that were made. I know there have been times when I scoffed at a product because of its cost, but then after reading reviews I relented and purchased it with no buyer's remorse.
ETA: Do you yourself use brushes from an art store? What kind would you suggest to the OP being that there a so many types. I know I went that route once and was overwhelmed...from the hair type to the shapes. Plus I find most of their handles to be too long to work on the face in front of a mirror.

Does that come with a makeup artist too? Because that would be a steal!
Man, I thought I was a baller when I dropped $30 on 1 makeup brush!
