Making fun of people
Do you think shows like American Idol (in its first few episodes before the actual competition) come down to being entertaining simply because the hosts are making fun of people?
Does anyone not see this show (or others, can't think right now) as opportunities to openly just make fun of people?
If so, is this acceptable?

Re: Making fun of people
the first few, yes, are making fun of the contestants. and they are pretty obvious about it.
but these people choose to participate, so they knew what they were getting into

Re: Making fun of people
You're sooo right. I saw a rerun the other day and they had poor William Hung on again...poor kid doesn't really get it. It bothers me when they prey on people who are so naive and trusting.

One of the reasons I don't watch AI is because Simon annoys the crap out of me. I don't find belittling people entertaining. JMO.
I know people probably know what they were getting into, I just am not that interested in watching it.

)I tried to watch last night, but couldn't. I don't like to see people stand in line for hours with these dreams to have someone be down right rude to them. It wasn't entertaining to me last night. (Which worked out well since I did not want to miss Scrubs

See, Simon doesnt' annoy me as much because I feel he's pretty straightforward and honest about things...although sometimes he's kind of harsh in the way he chooses to say things. It's more about when the people who are nice to the contestants all along suddenly start making fun of them and they don't even realize that they're being made fun of...I think that's just cruel.

Re: Making fun of people
I see what y ou are saying but i have to sit back and think...
Did William Hung or people like him think he could actually sing?
Did he use that show to get on tv knowing this kind of thing may happen?
I feel especially now, a lot of these "contestants" that are just aweful, know they are and do it to get made fun of for their 15 seconds of fame and being on tv.

I do think there are a lot of people who go on just to get on TV. I think there are also a lot of talented people they don't show because for whatever reason, the producers of the show don't think they will make "good TV".
I actually enjoy hearing about William Hung, because I think he used the show to his benefit and for whatever reason, the AI people seem so annoyed by it. Isn't that exactly what they do with all the other contestants?
I mostly get bored by the show and think in the end it is all a repeat of the parts of high school I disliked.....Cattiness at it best and in the end, just a big popularity contest. I usually can find something else I would rather watch.

I think AI is so funny. These people cant really think they can sing. Like the mother who told her son he could sing and she "crys" when he sings. What are you doing for your kid nothing

Doesn't really matter to me if they know what they are getting into or not, I don't find it entertaining when people are being laughed at.

I agree with this. These people are opening them up to this kind of ridicule. You know what is going to happen, but people want their 15 minutes of fame... It reminds me of that show- Who Wants To Marry a Multimillionaire- and Darva Conger was selected and had to marry the guy- but then divorced him immediately. She only wanted to be on TV. You get what you ask for...
As far as Simon being mean- that's one of the reasons people watch. This is what is now considered "good TV".
And we wonder why our kids are growing up to be so cruel and insensitive.

OK...well like i said. They have seen the show...THEY KNOW they are terrible...
IMO some are just asking for it...using it themselves

But you can't say that ALL of them on that show are there thinking they are going to be a singer either.

Re: Making fun of people
This show really serves as a lesson to me about the kids I hope to have and their aspirations. Because if my child sings like a bag full of screeching cats, and aspires to stardom, I really will tell him/her (gently, of course) that there has to be something else out there. If that were the case, I would never encourage going on a show like AI.
I felt terrible for that one kid whose mom and voice teacher thought he was so wonderful. He sucked and they did him no favors by gassing him up.

Re: Making fun of people
My only issue is with this portion of AI is that these people have been called back after their initial audition 4 times. Now, I am sure that some of them are there for their 15 min., but for those who really believe they can sing they actually think they are being called back because they are good. Basically, they build them up just to crush them with the judges.

Re: Making fun of people
You HAVE to know that you can't sing..COME ON!!! Everyone just wants to get on TV. I think it's hysterical what happens on this show.
I DON'T agree with Simon saying that obese woman needs a bigger stage. He shouldn't be making fun of people's weight.
