Male vs Female authors?

So, as an aspiring writer, I watched the JK Rowling story on last night. During the movie, when she gets an agent, the agent tells her he wants her to change her name (Joann Rowling) becuase boys don't want to read stuff written by a woman. Now, I can totally get this--young boys thinking it's going to be a girly book.

What about adult males? I know its mostly women on here and the men who come on here are well-read individuals, but I'm curious what everyone thinks and what their DH's would say. Would the fact that a book was written by a woman potentially turn a guy off from reading it? Especially in male dominated fields like Sci-fi or techno-thrillers?

Re: Male vs Female authors?

my initial thought was to say it doesn't matter...
and then i looked at DH's books. All his favorite authors are male.
but i'm thinking it may also have to do with his genre? DH loves non-fiction or fictional stories that i would call depressing (think WWII, trial and tribulations, not always a happy ending)

he won't even touch a sci-fi or fantasy (my favorite!) book so can't help you out there.

GL with the writing!

Re: Male vs Female authors?

My favorite types of books are mystery/thrillier/detective novels... i would say the majority are male authors but there are quite a few prominant female authors in the genre as well...

What's really funny about this (to me) is that I worked at Scholastic back in the late '90's (1998-1999, actually -- one of my few claims to fame is that I read Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone before it was published... I'm still mad at myself for not hanging onto that galley...)... anyway, one of the editors at the time always said that titles of kids' books should not have the name of the character in them because girls wouldn't want to read a title with a boy's name and vice versa. And then they published Harry Potter. Chat Icon I guess my point is that publishers do seem to think this way (both about authors' names AND titles), but it doesn't always seem to apply to the masses. Chat Icon

The Disney movie "Tangled" was originally called "Rapunzel", till they decided that boys wouldn't want to watch it with the original title....

I don't care about the gender of the author. I base it on the content.

Re: Male vs Female authors?

DH read Harry Potter so he's definitely open to female writers.

I personally do not read books written by a female author because in general women talk with feelings while men come straight to the point. Check this to get what I mean Link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ivUzfuuJNQI
