I had covid in January. It was very mild. I got the J&J vaccine yesterday. I had a horrible reaction to it. It was basically my covid symptoms times 100. I‘m just starting to feel better. There is no way I would subject my children to this. Ever. Immediately when the shot went in it felt different than any other shot I’ve ever had. Now I am a little freaked out because I feel like I made the wrong choice. There is not enough data on these vaccines. I regret taking it after having such a mild reaction to covid itself. I hope and pray that they don’t mandate this for children any time soon. In all of our lives I can’t recall any vaccine that makes people this sick. I know I’m not going to die from the shot but something definitely seems off. Everyone should have a choice when it comes to this and no one should be forced to take it.

On the flip side, I had J & J last week and had no reaction. Maybe in a year I'll drop dead from it, I really hope not, but after burying two cousins due to Covid it was a chance I was willing to take.

Sorry for your loss and glad you didn’t have the reaction that I did. That’s a chance you are willing to take but that chance should be a choice. Not a requirement.

Thank you. You are one of the only people who has ever offered their condolences on this board when I have mentioned that...everyone else glosses over it like two healthy middle aged women dying is normal. Of course it should be a choice, at least for now. But unless I have missed it this weekend as I haven't seen much news, I don't know of anybody being forced to get the vaccine.

I an sure there are jobs that will basically make you get one and the colleges are starting to get on board that you need to be vaccinated to go to them.

It’s moving so fast that I think it will be mandated on public schools in NY by fall 2022.

I wouldn’t doubt it.

I’m against it, just curious where others stand. And if those who quickly rolled up their sleeves for themselves are as quick to allow their children to?

1000% for it.

I am so confused by this post and many others on this thread and honestly it scares me for all of our children. The justification I’m hearing is “trust the science.” But what science is there here? The first kids to take these shots were only a few months ago! So the only science is on limited data from a few months? This is a brand new vaccine using medical technology that has never been used in a vaccine before - NO ONE not even science can say this is safe in the long term right now for our kids! They can guess based on science but no doctor or scientist can know for sure because there is not even one child who had this shot even a year ago! How many examples through time have we seen where something is medically approved and promoted and ten years later it’s pulled when it’s discovered that it caused cancer or infertility or autoimmune etc? I can give many examples! Even with vaccines there are examples! Sometimes the danger of a medicine etc isn’t even seen until the next generation! Where someone who took a certain medicine might have a child who is infertile etc. I’m shocked how as a society we will potentially sacrifice the life and health of our children for the sake of “normalcy”. Don’t you find it interesting that the teachers unions go nuts every time there is mention of mandating vaccines for teachers? No public school has mandated vaccines for teachers and they are the ones that could actually have a higher chance of getting seriously ill! They are standing up for themselves but who is standing up for our kids???? How does this make any sense! I don’t know one child who has gotten seriously ill from covid and many more children have had covid and for a longer term than the vaccine. How can we say the benefit to this group of mandatory vaccination outweighs the risk?????
.

I’m not decided if I would give my child this vaccine, but just to play devils advocate, we also have no idea of the long-term effects of Covid on our bodies.

We could find out that anyone who had Covid has serious organ damage that emerges 10 years later—even children that may have been asymptomatic or seemed to recover well.

And many parents that are against the vaccine seem to be totally OK with indoor, maskless activities. Why is that unknown ok??

Like all illnesses, we don’t know of long term effects.
We can’t be afraid of living because of the what if’s.

Actually we do know long-term effects of most illnesses, as they’ve been around and studied for hundreds of years.

Some people are willing to take the gamble of getting COVID

Some people are willing to take the gamble of getting the vaccine

We don’t know 100% about how well the vaccine will work but we do know better ways of how to take care of yourself when you get Covid now.

I wonder if there are statistics on mortality now that there are treatments and better care for those severely ill with covid. I am guessing the death rates are pretty low at this point but I could be wrong.

Well deaths in Suffolk county have dropped dramatically according to Suffolk Health.

Yes, but there are some very serious long term effects of COVID. I think, unfortunately, either choice is a crapshoot right now and each person has to decide which makes them more nervous- getting COVID or getting the vaccine.

I agree and no one should be pressured to do something they don’t want to do for whatever their reason. As well as being called names for what they choose.

I thought you can still get COVID even if you get the vaccine?

I actually think this is a good idea! College learning happens in large auditoriums, with lots of young adults who interact in groups and are highly likely to spread the virus. They live in dorms which are like petri dishes. They may not die from the virus but are highly likely to spread it. I for one think remote learning is for the birds.

That being said, I am also pro-vaccine. I think the mRNA vaccines are the future. It is a brilliant way to foster immunity in a much safer vehicle than a live, attenuated virus. I know there isn't decades of research behind it, and I understand that there is a fear of the unknown. I, however, think the benefits outweigh the risks and immunizing college students is a no brainer.

Colleges have ALWAYS required students to be current with their immunizations so I am not surprised they would now begin to require a COVID vaccine given how highly transmissible the virus is.

I don’t think any colleges require a flu shot which is way more deadly to college aged students than covid so please explain the logic to me.

COVID isn't flu. COVID is more contagious than flu. COVID causes many long term health issues unlike flu. COVID is a worldwide health crisis.

Plus, unless spread is severely limited, covid could morph into something vaccine resistant, and possibly more deadly, and then we are back to last year.

I don’t recall saying covid is the flu. I said the flu is more deadly than covid for
College aged people. And actually there are many long term complications that can come with the flu. I am not sure why you downplay the flu. The flu has been a worldwide health crisis. I think if you’re going to require a covid vaccine perhaps requiring a flu shot as well would be wise.

It’s unlikely it will become more deadly. It may stay the same, but most viruses become less deadly over time and thru mutations.

Mandatory Covid Vaccines for Colleges

I’m all for it. Vaccines work. I just had a direct exposure with a friend. I’m fine thankfully had multiple negative tests just to be sure.
I plan to get my kids vaccinated the moment it becomes available for them. It’s been 13 months. I’m over this and it needs to end. Vaccines work and vaccines are the answer I’m tired of people thinking their interpretations of things are fact, that their opinions are fact and that their Facebook news is fact. Science is science. People need to believe in science, get vaccinated and we all need to get on with our lives. That’s how it will end. Kids congregating in colleges, living together will cause a spread. Kids deserve a normal college experience, living in dorms, going to parties and bars, not sitting in a room on a remote learning platform.

You are not surprised that they are mandating a vaccine that isn’t even FDA approved for anyone? It’s only been approved for emergency use! It’s still in the experimental, trial phase! The implications of this and the fact that everyone thinks it is just fine are frightening.

This was part of the reason I started the thread. I sometimes feel alone thinking that this is frightening. I feel so much pressure to get this experimental “vaccine”. Some of my friends who are getting it are getting sicker from it compared to if they had gotten Covid. Meanwhile some get zero side effects from the vaccine. People getting Covid a couple days after the vaccine and dying (personally know a neighbor, granted she was in her 90’s). Until there is at lease 3 years of studying it (and I still don’t think that’s long enough) it shouldn’t be mandatory.

I agree with you. I am far from anti vax. I never once delayed a vaccine for my daughter.
She even gets a flu shot every year even though I'm not too sure she needs one- but she was in daycare for her first 4 years of life and around so many germs so I did it and I just kept doing it now that she's older.
I have no problem giving her a vaccine if I feel the benefit outweighs the risk. And right now I have no clue what the risk of this vaccine is. So I'm allowed to be cautious about what I put in my body and especially my child's body without being lectured about science and the path to normalcy.
To be honest, it's getting a bit tiring.
Go get vaccinated, vaccinated your child. I really don't give a shit. But don't judge me for having questions. And stop pushing your agenda on eveyrone else. If you think this vaccine is the greatest gift to man and it wil protect you like nothing else, then you shouldn't be worried about those who don't get it. You'll be protected. Worry about yourself.

All I know is my own experience. I got covid and it was completely mild. I got the vaccine and I was sicker than I can ever remember being. I will never take it again, and I will probably not allow my children to get it. Sorry that you are "over this" and you think vaccines are the answer. I think living life with certain risks is the answer.
You should absolutely get the vaccine for you and your children then but don't force your beliefs on anyone else.

A.men and no will will talk about how it is not approved and only an emergency vaccine. It is all of you don’t want it you don’t believe science. Too many brainwashed people out there.

I’ve been hearing that from a lot of people. That the reaction to the vaccine may be a lot worse if you had Covid. I wonder why that is?

I’ve been hearing that from a lot of people. That the reaction to the vaccine may be a lot worse if you had Covid. I wonder why that is?

I've heard that too. This is just my speculation, but maybe the immune goes into overdrive when it sees the spike protein because it already remembers the virus and attacks. There is no scientific evidence of this, just my thoughts. Chat Icon

Yes - it does make sense logically although I am not sure if it is scientifically proven. i did ask when I was getting the vaccine and they told me that it wouldn't matter.

Everyone should note thou that they are finding that 70% of people are having side effects from J&J - 50% of whom experience AT LEAST mild flu like symptoms with fever, chills, headache, fatigue. So half of the people that take J&J are getting sick.

Why shouldn't it be mandatory? Don't you have to show proof of immunization for other things? COVID just wreaked havoc on the US for the last year, I am not surprised at all that it would be mandatory.
