We have a group in my area that have been contacting every public official daily for months now. It does nothing.

While I am personally against masking any children, masking the youngest is absolutely abuse. Also it makes no sense since they have not been masked for the last 18 months and now it's an issue? Follow the science they say...this is not science it's politics.

Ugh I just contacted Kaminsky and my assembly person. Their offices are a quick drive for me so I might pop in to see if there are any warm bodies to talk to.

Kaminsky is one of the worst ones! He’s not my senator but I did reach out to him and talked to him in Albany a few years ago and he’s all for mandates. He was like that before and I wouldn’t doubt he’s the same way now.

OMG I saw the video on fb this weekend and it was horrible.

These people are insane that are making this mandatory. There is NO way these kids, especially at 2 will keep a mask on.

Bunch of hypocrites who don't wear masks themselves. People need to start fighting back. I just saw a quick video of people in Australia fighting back. It is all getting ridiculous.

What if the daycares just looked the other way when the 2 year old ripped their masks off?
Ooppss!! Can't keep these rascally kids masked!
What can ya do??

That’s what I’m actually hoping happens.

It can happen. I actually know a place that does that. The only worry would be if there are Karens that can potentially report them.

Be ready to have some gaslight you and say well if everyone just got vaccinated/wore masks everywhere including open space outside this wouldn’t be a problem.

I don’t think you know what gaslighting means.

Seems like emails won’t work. Pulling kids from daycares/ schools is the only thing that will work. I feel for these poor little kids and their parents

And that's next to impossible for working parents.
The government knows they have us over a barrel.
They are truly disgusting.
They don't give one shitt about us or our children

My youngest has been wearing a mask at daycare since she turned 3 due to the requirements in my state. They don’t wear them while eating or sleeping and within the past several months, we could give written permission for the kids to not have to wear them outside.

It has been over a year with wearing masks. I wasn’t thrilled about it at first, but most kids seem to adapt really easily. There was a transitional period as well to get the kids used to it. I think it also helped for them to see everyone else in masks. At the beginning, it was difficult to get her to keep it on even if we went places where masks were required. Once she got used to the mask, she began putting it on without any issue. She doesn’t complain about wearing it.

Unfortunately, we have had positive cases at daycare throughout the pandemic. I’m unaware of any transmission between kids at daycare though. After going months without a positive case, we have had a few in the last month in different age groups. My child is currently home due to being in direct contact with someone who tested positive at daycare. All of my kids have been in quarantine at some point due to exposure, but I was most nervous about this one because kids that young seem most likely to not wear their masks correctly. She’s past the quarantine period and has had a negative test and we’re just waiting for her daycare room to reopen. I don’t know if kids this young just have a lower viral load and are less likely to spread the virus, if the masks actually worked or it’s a combination of the two. Regardless, this past year, the masks have certainly cut down on all of the colds/viruses that usually go around.

I'm actually worried my 3 year old is going to get sick more often now that she'll be dropping her mask on the floor and putting it back on her face. And the teachers will constantly be touching her face to put her mask on. There will be a lot more touching of her face now.

Like many 3-4 year olds, my child is very independent and only wants to put her mask on herself. Of course if kids need help, the teachers will assist, but once the kids get used to it, I think they’ll be able to figure out how to keep it on assuming it fits correctly.

I can only speak to my experience and those I know in my area, but masks seemed to keep the daycare germs at bay this past year.

Exactly right. They know there is no choice that’s why they are zeroing in on these kids. It’s pathetic and they truly are punishing children and their working parents

It's so gross. They'll be sneezing into the masks and then wearing them like that all day, drooling in them (the little ones), touching them, swapping them with friends, having them all over the floor.
It's unsanitary and totally gross and someone who is aware of SCIENCE and perhaps a medical professional should step in and tell this assh0le governor of ours just how dangerous this is.

Speaking from my experience only, we are asked to have at least 1 extra mask in their backpack or cubby and there are always disposable masks on hand. There are certainly times when the masks can get gross, but the dirty ones are put in a bag and changed out.

DD hasn’t come home with a mask that isn’t hers and I’ve never seen her in someone else’s mask. Masked or not, toddlers, preschoolers, etc. can often be unsanitary and gross. They can wipe their noses on their hands and then touch common surfaces or toys, not wash their hands thoroughly, not cover their nose and/or mouth when they sneeze/cough, put things in their mouth that were on the floor, etc.

I understand the concerns and I wish we could be done with masks for good. However, since they’ll continue to be around for a while, I do think many young kids are more adaptable than older kids and adults.

Yes, kids at that age or gross. And yet they all survived daycare unmasked.
Until now

Great. Fine. Fantastic. But all of this ignores statistics and “the science” that covid poses almost NO risk to children!

Re: Masking and children

All I can think of is the amazing immunity my DD built up in daycare. She was there from 8 weeks old. She got sick a lot those first years, all the normal stuff.
Once she got to elementary school she never got sick.
I can count on one hand the number of sick days she took in all 6 years of elementary. And that's counting 2 or 3 days where she had a "nervous stomach " when she had some anxiety issues.
All I can think of is had she been forced to be masked in those yeara when her immune system was developing, she probably would have missed a lot more elementary school due to sickness

That could certainly be said on both sides. People throw around stats, studies, stories, etc. that support their argument.

As far as COVID not posing much of a risk to children, that’s not the only consideration in enacting mask mandates. It’s certainly not perfect, but masks can protect others and reduce transmission. While children are likely to have mild cases and recover quickly, they may pass it to a classmate and then pass it to others who are at greater risk. With the contagiousness of the Delta variant, the increase in positive cases in children along with other groups has gone up dramatically over the past few months. Masks at least provide some protection to others.

The vaccine should be doing that for those at greater risk.
That's the point of it I thought.
You shouldn't have to mask a 2 year old to protect a higher risk adult when ca vaccines are widely available.
That argument held water prior to the development of the vaccine.

Great. Fine. Fantastic. But all of this ignores statistics and “the science” that covid poses almost NO risk to children!

They only trust the science when it's convenient to them...disgusting.

As many like to point out on here, vaccinated people can still get COVID and there are some who become seriously ill and die. There are also those who may be at risk who are too young to be vaccinated or for medical reasons cannot get the vaccine as well as those who have gotten the vaccine, but likely aren’t protected due to immunosuppressants they are on or their autoimmune conditions (i.e. transplant recipients; those with certain types of cancer).

I understand the hesitation and resistance. The kids are young and the idea of them wearing masks for a large portion of the day isn’t appealing at all. However, based on what I’ve seen over the past year and in talking with daycare providers, it’s a much bigger deal for the adults than it is for the kids. My child and the others I see are happy, well adjusted and don’t seem bothered by the mask. Of course I wish no one needed a mask and was hopeful several months ago that we were inching towards ditching them entirely. From a public health standpoint though, I can see why there is more of a push for masks now.

It is not a child’s job to protect adults who can protect themselves. It is not a child’s obligation to restrict their breathing, impair their learning, impede their social skills, and grow up living in fear and anxiety just so that the world can achieve immortality for all. Sorry but it’s not and it is shocking that some think it is.

This 100%
Perhaps the focus should be on fixing the vaccine so people are not still worried about dying after they are fully vaccinated.. to the point we have to mask our babies.
Perhaps those that are so severely immune compromised that they have to worry about an unmasked toddler should have to take the onus on themselves to protect themselves by being ultra careful. It sucks, but that's life. They certainly shouldn't be in a daycare center if they are that medically fragile.

It breaks my heart to go into daycares and preschools right now. For over a year these little guys have been functioning fine without masks now all of a sudden they have to be masked. People don't understand the issues that arise with this. I'm suppose to be doing speech to help these kids and I can't see there mouths. Non verbal cues are a thing of the past we use many modalities to communicate and covering one of them is horrible.

Kids starting school do get sick often but they do build an immune system. That is irreplaceable by medicine.

Masking and children

I’m all for masking school age children if it results in fewer quarantines. But 2 is too young. As a former daycare parent myself, I feel awful for these kids and parents.

Not all adults can protect themselves and there are children who are vulnerable as well who are too young to be vaccinated. There are enough people who don’t want to do anything to protect themselves or others that we’ll keep continuing down the same path of restrictions, quarantines, etc.

No one likes masks, but adults seem much more bothered by them than kids. I had mixed feelings about masks when they were first required in daycare and I never thought it was necessary to mask outside in a school or daycare setting. I can certainly understand the frustration when kids haven’t been masked in daycare until now and have been okay, but we’re dealing with more contagious variants than we were previously. I’m just sharing that having been through this for over a year now, it does seem to provide protection in the positive cases we’ve had at daycare and hasn’t been the negative experience people who haven’t experienced this are making it out to be.

How many children in daycare have been hospitalized or died from this Delta variant?

If you are that vulnerable an adult and you can't protect yourself, you probably shouldn't be working in a day care center. At any time not just during Covid. There are so many other illness that can kill you if you are that fragile.
This argument can go on and on until we are masking newborns to protect the fragile adults.
It's never going to end.
This is the like the diabetic eating grapes in the grocery store argument.
Well what if this, what if that, what if my baby coughs on someone who is medically fragile? She's only 6 months old, so perhaps she should be masked. To protect the adult who can't protect themselves. They can't protect themselves, but my baby in a mask will save them.
We can bring up all kinds of scenarios if we really try. It's getting tiresome

Re: Masking and children

I won’t quote because it’s too long but it’s getting tiresome hearing how unless we comply with everything (including things that do not work) then we will be in this cycle of restrictions and quarantines forever. No. It is the exact opposite. This will never ever end unless and until we the people end it. People seem to forget that before 2019, people got sick. Yes. Yes they did. And yet somehow the last 18 months have made people truly convinced that nobody can ever be sick ever again and by golly if that means ruining children’s lives then so be it.
