Re: masters....
1st in Elem Ed from CW Post (would NOT recommend)
2nd Masters in Literacy from Hofstra. I absolutely loved the program and was able to use 95% of what I learned in my classroom. It is expensive though.

Re: masters....
Secondary Education
Hofstra University - very expensive
To be honest, I went there for convenience and wish I had gone the state school route like I did for undergrad.
I had very good professors, but my adviser offered little to no advice and obviously had very little classroom time. Luckily, she left my last semester and her replacement loved teaching.

Re: masters....
I got mine in Literacy B-6. I went to St. John's University. I did my undergrad at SJU as well, but I learned sooooo much in grad school. It helped be to become a better teacher and to get my job as a reading specialist and coach. I highly recommend the Literacy masters, I know my bosses loved seeing resumes with Literacy Masters. It's also great if you want to do things outside the classroom.

I went to Stonybrook. It was all online. I finished in a year. I got my MA in Liberal Studies but only because I teach B-6 sped/general ed. So I qualified. I strongly recommend it!

Re: masters....
I was originally going for my english secondary at Stony Brook, but had to finish my BA in English when I decided to switch to Elem because SB doesn't have an Elementary program. So I had a BA in English and got my MS in Elementary Ed from Hofstra. It was expensive, but I absolutely LOVED the program.

Re: masters....
Special Education with a concentration in Emotional Disturbance
HOWEVER
My graduate program (Dec 1995 grad from Hofstra) was a program that was geared towards students who did not have a background in education and was focused towards DUAL certification. My masters was 50+ credits, but I finished with a certification in Special Education as well as Elementary Education. I can teach Special Ed from Pre K-12 and Elementary Ed from Pre K-6. Im grandfathered in and do not have to recertify HOWEVER my certs are not as specific as they are now.

Re: masters....
Students with disabilities.
I went to Adelphi and did their Sunday program. each semester was broken down into 8 week cycles. so you took 6 credits each 8 week cycle to be able to complete 12 a semester. I twas 9-5 or semothing every sunday. It worked out well i completed all the classes in a yr and a half (but you have to also do student teaching)
you are not required to write a thesisjust to take 2 research classes.

Did a dual masters in FL (Spanish K-12) and TESOL K-12 from NYU. Costly, but worth every penny.

Re: masters....
I got my secondary certification as an undergrad, but then went on to Hofstra for MSEd in counseling - which I thought was totally not worth the money. I only chose HU over Queens, since they accepted credits from my undergrad and I only had to do 42 credits instead of 60 at Queens.
I then went on to get my MLS-school media from Queens. AWESOME! and I love that I'm not paying for it years later. The professors were great and it was challenging.
What I've learned from my experience (when we hire) is that the school you go to really doesn't matter too much (UNLESS its teachers college)

Re: masters....
DH has his Masters of Science from Dowling in Education. He is certified to teach Biology, Chemistry, and General Science grades 5-12. He got something called the "middle child extension" to cover both Middle School as well as High school. He hustled - finished the program in nine months.
When I go for mine I'm going to Queens College for Family and Consumer Science Education. Then, once certified, I can teach Home & Careers.
My sister is a Reading teacher - she has her Masters from Dowling in Reading with a Dual Certification in Special Education.
