masters in education
Which masters programs did you all attend? I need something that won't break the bank so I'm thinking a CUNY school? I have no idea what I need or where to start! I looked into the teaching fellows program but I minored in education in undergrad so they won't accept me. Any suggestions or advice would be much appreciated, TIA

I went to Hofstra and it was  If I had to do it over again, I would go to CUNY Queens or SUNY Old Westbury to save some money.

I went to Queens for my MLS and was very happy with them...since you have a minor in education, you might also get into their certification program - not a MA, but you can get into teaching faster.

I'm on the queens college website, all I see is a 39 credit or 46 credit masters program? Nothing for just a certification program. I already have a masters degree in a different field so if there is a certification program without the masters degree, this would be the route for me.

I went to Hofstra. It was a lot of money, but I felt I got my money's worth! I loved the program!

I would call the BOCES certification Dept first and have them go over your transcripts. From there they will tell you what you will need to become certified. You might not have to take as many classes as you think since you minored in Ed already.

I did the program at QC, and I did the Advanced Certificate program too. It was just a year to get cerrtified, and it led right into the Master's program. The money angle made it VERY worthwhile if you ask me.

CUNY Hunter College worked for me! It was a program pretty much tailored to working people, so all of my classes were at night.

was this minor in education part of a secondary certification (i.e. you majored in English but minored in education to be certified in English?)
you may not need much else to get certified--maybe just a few courses. or you may already be certified in your subject area with this "minor" in education.
also it depends on what you want to get certified in..

I have my MS in SED from Hofstra. It was $$$, but it did prepare me and I did have job when I graduated. However, I wasn't thrilled with either student teacher placement/support or the ceritifcation office.
My Educcational Adminstration degree is from St. Johns. It was a great program, but I rushed through it for the credits (ie my +30 or +60  ). I started this program at Hofstra, but SJU was much more flexible with January and summer classes. They also let me intern in my own school.

I got my masters at Hofstra too, I absolutely loved the program!! I don't remember the cost though, I only took 2 courses a semester b/c I was working full time and paying out of pocket.

No, I majored in psychology, it wasn't a secondary certification. I was thinking of elementary ed.

I got my Masters in literacy from Teachers College Columbia University.
It's expensive as all he**, and the commute sucks--but I am positive I never could have gotten that kind of hands-on education anywhere else. My professor was the person who basically invented the idea of Reader's and Writer's workshops.
I know you said you don't want to break the bank, but it might be worth it to look into.

I am currently going to Dowling- Its something like $700 a credit I think and the certification program is 36 credits I want to say.
