maternity Leave? 3.5 months full salary or 7 months at 1/2 salary
Older son will continue at daycare 2 or 3 days a week for socialization and to maintain his normal routine as much as possible. Obviously, full salary will be easier than 1/2 salary, but 1/2 salary is doable. I just feel like 7 months home with 2 kids a few days a week will be a loooonnnnnggggg 7 months! Discuss...pros and cons of each....
this will be our last child and therefore my last maternity leave...

I would absolutely take the 7 months at 1/2 salary... I'd want as much time with my LO as possible!!

7 months at 1/2 salary! First of, you will ease into the routine of caring for two kids and you will adjust your spending and probably will save on care for #2. And you will be able to spend more time with your LO at home. I don't know, I would do it in a heartbeat!

7 months 1/2 salary. I think it will give you and the baby more time to bond as well as spending more time with your older son. You can't make up that time you will be able to spend with them, but you can always cut back on some spending. 7 months is a long time but I would do it in a heartbeat.

agreed, I have to go back after 12 weeks and I am already really sad about it. If you can swing it - do it!

I wish I had a 7 month option with pay. I get my 3 months with 6 weeks disability + Aflac.

Re: maternity Leave? 3.5 months full salary or 7 months at 1/2 salary
I will add that although I love my son and will love my new LO coming, I do not have the strength or patience to be a sahm. (not sure how all you fabulous ladies do it!!!)))
I stayed out almost 6.5 months last time, but my mother got very ill shortly after my son was born and i needed to help her. when she got better, i couldn't wait to get back to work.

Re: maternity Leave? 3.5 months full salary or 7 months at 1/2 salary
well I think that it just depends. .. I would probably opt for the 3 months and fulll salary and then ease back in. . . and if full time doesn't work then you can probably renegotiate something then as it seems like they might be flexible. .. like could you go back part time then. .and I am with you -I don't think I have it in me to be a SAHM though I REALLY respect and admire all the women who can bc I think it's so great for the kids. .of course I might change my mind after the LO but right now don't know!

That's an amazing option! Is your job protected the whole time? (At my job, you're only legally protected for 12 weeks.) If so, I'd jump on it!

Re: maternity Leave? 3.5 months full salary or 7 months at 1/2 salary
I think I would take the 7 months (if I was sure I know we could afford it). My job only gives 6 or 8 weeks depending on the birth which is paid and they use all my sick days. I am jealous!

Re: maternity Leave? 3.5 months full salary or 7 months at 1/2 salary
As a mom of two I would still do 7 months at 1/2 salary. It's really not until about 18 months that I am kind of done being home with two. Also my son was a total nightmare. No way could I have functioned at a job at 3 months PP.

for the record, I work for the government. They give a seven month maternity leave, whether paid or unpaid depending on your accruals. Either way you are entitled to it. If you chose to use accruals, you can. They also have an option where you can reduce your salary a few months ahead of time to allow you to "bank" it for later use. This is the option I am choosing. This is what allowed me the option of paid maternity leave.
And yes my job is protected the whole time.

Re: maternity Leave? 3.5 months full salary or 7 months at 1/2 salary
Crashing, but I vote 7 and understand what you're saying about being concerned about being a SAHM. That said, I think 7 months is ideal b/c you might get to enjoy baby 3.5 he/she might not be STTN and you will likely still be in survival mode. If you stay home 7 months, you'll likely get a rountine you'll enjoy.
