Maternity Leave disappointment - I'm up the creek with no paddle
So if it isn't enough that DH was down sized so he's out of work right now...
Now I find out that I can't buy up my disability insurance for my maternity leave or buy LTD for maternity leave (I can use it for another disability, isn't that nice). I have no idea if I'm going to be paid at all and if so for how many weeks. If it weren't gut wrenching enough to leave my kid with a "nanny" after only 3 short months, I will run away from home if I find out that I can't even be out 3 months. I have to find a work from home job... after this pay cut or possibly no pay (I do have short term disability so I'm hoping that will cover, HR has to email me back - GFB anyone calls you these days) I can't afford child care. I'm crying so hard right now, my nose is bleeding... glad I'm bringing a child into this twisted world I'm part of.

Can you go back to work a little sooner than 3 months and afford day care?
I know it's awful how maternity leave is handled in the US.

There is no way I'm taking any less time away from the baby... it's bad enough I have to return to work at all. Plus, child care being as expensive as it is, my time with the baby is most important. We'll have to deal with it, some bills won't get paid, that's for darn sure.
Just found out, I only get paid for 6 weeks... so 6 weeks with NO PAY. Oh well... hope the grandparent's were planning on helping with stuff. I have to look for a stay at home job, 6 weeks without pay is going to set me back too much to afford the nanny.

Not that other people's sucky lives make your situation any better- but I don't get paid at all for any time. I am what one would call f*cked.

it'll work out!!!
I am pretty f*cked too! Adn we are hoping to get into our new home this spring on just my DH salary.
I don't even have a job and no one will hire me at this point being pregnant, so I have to start job hunting after the baby is born, which means I have to get day care just so I can go on an interview!

Messed up country we live in when a mom can't even have a few *paid* weeks to take care of her child. Especially considering how hard we women work all year long. It's such BS.

I agree, I'm sorry about your situation, however I only get 6 weeks, and I don't get paid at all either. At least you can get 6 paid, and take off another 6. I have to go back to work.

Re: Maternity Leave disappointment - I'm up the creek with no paddle
I nearly had a nervous breakdown in the beginning when I realized that my 3 months were unpaid. I'll get my leftover vacation and sick days (thankfully!!) plus 6 weeks short term disability which barely pays enough to buy groceries let alone a mortgage. I won't be taking anything in for at least half the time that I'm out. So I can't get sick before I give birth because I can't afford to use my sick days now and I can't go out on maternity leave early because then I lose time at home with my baby.
It sucks but you'll make it through.
