Medical Records...Hospital Location Closing...
How long is a hospital obligated to keep records?
A friend of mine had a procedure done in January 2005 and was in ICU. He is now trying to access his records.
The location of the hospital closed (they are operating out of another location) - and every department we've contacted is giving us different answers.
Can anyone help?

they had to have had them sent to a storage facility.
I believe they must be stored at least 7 years.

Re: Medical Records...Hospital Location Closing...
Was it covered by insurance? if so, they will also have all those records.
My understanding is that they are ordered by law to maintain records for 10 years. if the insitution closes, they are supposed to (I believe) maintain them in a private offsite storage facility or perhaps another medical facility that's taking over any patients maybe?
Does he recall the name of any of the doctors? Maybe he can contact them?

Wow, that sux. What departments have been contacted? Have you tried finding out the hospital administrators name and filing a complaint that you are getting the run around from the hospital?

Re: Medical Records...Hospital Location Closing...
It is 7 years for a doctor's office and I believe it is the same for a hospital. Many of them use copy services or other types of outsourcing companies to either copy the records or maintain and copy them. ChartOne is a company that comes to mind. Maybe you can find out if they serviced that hospital. If the hospital was part of a network, contact the Medical Records department at one of the related hospitals.
