Menu for backyard first bday party
I'm having DS's birthday party in our backyard in July, and we are inviting close to 50 adults & 20 kids. We don't want to BBQ because the last party we had (around the same amount of people), DH was stuck at the BBQ for HOURS!!! DH's family helped with the planning of the food for the last party, and everything was too time consuming, and there were way too many options (there were leftovers for probably 50 people, but that's how they do things Thank God they paid for a lot of the food). Needless to say, everyone enjoyed that party except me and DH.
This time around I will be planning the entire party myself and I will be doing everything the way I want. Now I need ideas from you ladies because I suck at this Trying to keep the cost down, so I am willing to do a lot of it myself or ask others to help. But I really want to enjoy the party and not be slaving away in the kitchen or running around waitressing. Thoughts?

What about trays of baked ziti or lasagna or something? Chicken Parm, or Marsala is easy to make in bulk too.
For dessert, I am totally envisioning dirt dessert cups! lol

Do you think it would be too hot for hot food like that? A friend of mine who is great at hosting parties suggested I do something like this:
marinated skirt steak chicken kabobs mini deli sandwiches from Dominics (Italian, American, roast beef) grilled veggie platter (eggplant, zucchini, asparagus) chicken fingers w/ honey mustard BLT pasta salad (bacon, tomato, lettuce, bowtie pasta) w/ homemade balsamic vinaigrette classic caesar salad spinach salad (chopped egg, bacon, red onion, mushroom) w/ rasberry vinaigrette french baguette
She suggested grilling steak, kabobs & veggies 1-2 hours before party starts & serve at room temperature. The only thing that would be catered would be the sandwiches and chicken fingers, and the steak I could get a great price on ordering it through a restaurant I do the books for. Maybe I could add penne ala vodka or baked ziti as another dish.
Do you think this is too ambitious?
Apps would be: chips & dip tortilla chips w/ salsa & guacamole crostini & bruschetta
Dessert table/buffet (w/ favor boxes to take home): fruit salad w/ marshmallow fluff/cream cheese dip (to DIE for!) cupcakes oreo balls chocolate covered pretzel rods rice krispy treats drizzled w/ chocolate chocolate covered bananas chocolate dipped strawberries runts M&Ms Maybe: marshmallow smores pops, rainbow cookies, sugar cookies, brownie bites
I would love if anyone could tweak this menu or give me totally different ideas. I'm not looking to make things more difficult, because I don't have much help.
I would also love other ideas for the dessert buffet if you have any!!!
FYI: The theme is "sufin' monkey", so anything banana related would be kind of cute

Your menu looks really good to me, the only thing I might be careful with are all of the chocolate covered things....sometimes chocolate and July don't always mix.

Re: Menu for backyard first bday party
We had DDs baptism in our backyard last June...we had about the same number of people and we had these things:
Apps: Mozzarella and tomato skewers Bean Salad with chips Homemade bruschetta Seafood salad
Main Course: Heros (italian, american, and grilled vegetable) German potato salad Regular potato salad Macaroni salad Orzo salad with shrimp Bags of potato chips 7 layer salad Mesculin salad with crasins, walnuts, gorgonzola Hot dogs with all the fixings (my inlaws own a hot dog cart) Baked Beans
Dessert: Cake Homemade cheesecake Cinnamon roll bites Fruit Salad Ice cream bars
ETA: I did all the cooking myself (with a little help from my talenting and helpful family!) except for the heros, which I ordered from our local deli and the cake.
